Weapons modifications were special adjustment that Ratchet could buy and add to his weapons to improve them, or to give them an extra ability. Mods first appeared in Going Commando, as sold by Slim Cognito at the back of his truck on various planets in the game.
In Going Commando there were three types of mods: the Lock On Mod, the Shock Mod, and the Acid Mod. Lock On Mod (Going Commando)|s were available for most weapons that Ratchet owned, while the acid and Shock Mods were never available for the same weapon at the same time. Slim Cognito sold these mods at the back of his truck in Megapolis, Endako, at the mining area, Tabora, and in Silver City, Boldan for platinum bolts.
Up Your Arsenal
In Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, weapon modifications were automatically added on as Ratchet used and upgraded his weapons.
In Ratchet: Deadlocked, mods took the center stage as the main source of weapon improvement. There were two classifications of mods: alpha and omega. Both types of mods could be swapped for each weapon at any time, and both could be purchased with bolts at vendors, with alpha mods purchasable during challenge mode, while omega mods unlock as progress was made and new planets are accessed.
Alpha mods improved a weapon basic stats and include speed, knock-back, damage, range, ammo, blast-range, jackpot, and nano-boost. Multiple alpha mods could be equipped with more modification slots opening up once weapons were upgraded, and up to ten slots were available after reaching level ten. There were a limited amount of alpha mods that could be allocated across all weapons, and more were obtained as weapons leveled up or were purchased at a vendor. Ratchet started out with an extra ammo mod not equipped on a weapon, and each weapon came pre-equipped with alpha mods and upgrades would also equip weapons with extra alpha mods, each depending on the level and kind of weapon.
Omega mods included shock, brainwash, napalm, freeze, morph, infect, time-bomb, and mini-bomb. Only one omega mod could be an equipped at a time per weapon, but each type of omega mod could be equipped on multiple weapons at once.
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters reintroduced Slim Cognito as the intermediate between Ratchet and his weapon mods, and were sold for a certain number of bolts. Each weapon had several specific mods including the usual lock-on, shock and Acid Mods, in addition to some weapon specific mods such as a double barrel mod that was available for the Lacerator.
In multiplayer mode, creates could be found that had weapon modifications that when broken and the contents collected, the weapon would have the mod attached.
