Warbots are enemies in Ratchet & Clank (2016 game) and the movie. They are sentient armored, humanoid, blargian robots used by Drek Industries for invasions, created by Dr. Nefarious, and led by Victor Von Ion. Built from the finest raritanium in the galaxy, they were created in a robot factory in Skorg City on Quartu.[1] Clank was built as a warbot, but due to a factory error caused by a lightning strike, he was instead created from a different series. Warbots are fought on Veldin, Kerwan, Gaspar, Batalia, Kalebo III, and the Deplanetizer. Many warbots are transported by blarg armored transports.
Four types of warbot appear, each being considered a different type of enemy in-game. The first are silver or brown and are initially encountered on Veldin, the second type are equipped with jetpacks and are found on Gaspar, the third are an upgraded red version on Kalebo III, and the final upgraded version are yellow and on the second visit to the Deplanetizer.
Warbots are a replacement for sentry-bots in both gameplay and story role from the original Ratchet & Clank.
History[]
Warbots were commissioned by Chairman Drek in order to provide Victor an army to destroy the Galactic Rangers in the Hall of Heroes on Kerwan. Dr. Nefarious first created three-hundred of these warbots, though while showcasing the new troops, a defect, Clank, was churned out by the factory. Drek sent Victor to destroy Clank, though Victor was only capable of damaging Clank's escape shuttle, causing him to crash-land in the Kyzil Plateau, Veldin.[1] Warbots were then fought by Ratchet and Clank during "Return to the garage", attacking the garage while searching for Clank.
A red warbot force was then sent to Aleero City, Kerwan, to attack the Hall of Heroes. An overwhelming force was deployed by a Class G Dreadship to attack the Rangers. However, Ratchet and Clank used the warbots' Raritanium armor against them, using their ship's Mag Booster to propel the warbots against the Dreadship in "Take down the Warship".
Warbots were next fought in the Blarg Research Outpost on planet Gaspar, first defending the Blarg Depot during "Fight the Blarg", and later throughout the Telepathopus Fields during missions "Trade 20 brains for an infobot" and onwards. They were next fought by Ratchet and Cora Veralux attacking Fort Krontos on Batalia during "Travel to the Fort" and "Get to the Turret". When the Rangers attacked Skorg City on planet Quartu, warbots defended the factory in "Infiltrate the factory" and "Investigate the factory". Additionally, inactive warbots were seen on the assembly lines within the factory.
On board the Deplanetizer, more heavily armored warbots were fought during Ratchet's first visit in "Disable the Security System" and "Head to the Bridge". They were fought again during Drek Industries' invasion of the Gadgetron Headquarters on Kalebo III, in the mission "Find the Focus Lab", as Ratchet and Clank found a Hologuise used to sneak past them. Upon return to the Hologuise, Ratchet used it to fool the warbots while infiltrating in "Locate the Gravity Stabilizer", and fought many during the mission "Head to the Core".
Characteristics[]
Warbots proton-powered, rust proof, and laser-guided[1] humanoid robots with a glowing red eye, strong metallic jawlines, and a large jetpack on their back. They have a heavily armored upper torso with broad shoulders, while their legs and arms are relatively thin. As they sustain damage, their armor will drop off bit by bit, revealing that they have only a thin torso beneath. They carry a pistol as a weapon (sometimes a Combuster, and sometimes their own custom black laser blaster). Warbot armor has different colors depending on their appearance; warbots invading Kerwan and patrolling the Deplanetizer have red armor, while warbots fought elsewhere have purely metallic armor with a black trim.
In battle, warbots will either deploy their jetpack to fly while firing, or fire from the ground, depending on which they have chosen. They spread out their laser blasts to hit their opponent. Inside the Deplanetizer, when idle, some will go out and patrols looking for intruders, and when Captain Qwark waves at them, they will wave back and greet him.
Combat[]
Warbots attack with their ranged weapon, firing from the ground or from the air, and spreading out their lasers to attack Ratchet. These lasers should be dodged carefully as they do decent damage, and they are just slow enough to be predicted and dodged. Warbots are also very tough, heavily armored opponents. They are best defeated with the Warmonger or Plasma Striker, as those weapons will do sufficient damage while being able to fire in the air. The Buzz Blades are also effective against them, and the Fusion Grenade or Predator Launcher can be suitable substitutes. The Glove of Doom is also strong against those on the ground, and once upgraded to the Apocalypse Glove, is useful against all of them. In a large group, it is wise to destroy warbots first, as they are a large source of damage not easy to dodge, as well as being tough enemies that ammo should be prioritized against.
Behind the scenes[]
Warbots appear as Dr. Nefarious' underlings in Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie.
The pre-production designs for the Warbots and many characters in the 2016 game and movie were created by Go For Launch Productions.
