Scanner Minion

Artwork of a scanner minion in All 4 One

Utility bots[1] are robots who appear in Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. One also has a brief appearance in the re-imagined Ratchet & Clank game.

They are flying robots primarily used to perform utility functions in various work places.

The type who appear in All 4 One are known as scanner minions, they acted as checkpoints throughout planet Magnus. Whenever at the end of a segment, the bot would fly in and present the stats and accolades of each player.

In Rift Apart they appear as workers of the Nefarious Empire, while another type called a science bot is utilized by the miners on Blizar Prime.

History[]

Ratchet & Clank re-imagined[]

A utility bot appears with the Solana Troopers escorting Shiv Helix to Qwark's cell in the Aleero City Penitentiary.

All 4 One[]

When the heroes are on the elevator in the receiving station, the steward has a scanner minion scan them, saying "organic life forms detected, reroute to creature pen for probing and dissection." However, the heroes quickly respond that they are new trainees not creatures and the steward believes them, thus instead sending the heroes to the training facility. The four would go on to encounter several more scanner minions during their journey across Magnus.

Rift Apart[]

Maynard[]

Maynard Rift Apart

Helperbot Maynard.

Maynard is a utility robot and the Morts' helperbot on Sargasso, assisting them in their day-to-day tasks. Unlike the other named utility bots encountered in Rift Apart like Junk Bot or the Chief Engineer's Science Bots; B.O.B., J.I.M., and S.A.M., Maynard does not ever speak and only makes computerized noises.

He is first encountered in Rift Apart when Rivet enters a pocket dimension to follow a Speetle and presumes the utility bot must have wandered inside through an open rift. Upon jumping on a Speetle, Maynard begins acting as a guide for Rivet and leads her on a path out of the pocket dimension and back to the Gelatonium factory. When the Goons are defeated, Maynard will stay at the front of the factory where Rivet can interact with him to give greetings. Later when the Emperor attacks the planet with his armies, Maynard again acts as a guide and leads Rivet and Kit towards the Morts' repaired Seekerpede to free it from a dimensional anomaly, so that it may assist them in defending Sargasso.

B.O.B.[]

B.O.B

Science Bot B.O.B.

B.O.B. is the first utility Science Bot of the Chief Engineer that Rivet encounters. The bot is found in a rich Blizon deposit area, where she hurriedly leads Rivet out of a lava cavern and tells her to strike some Blizon to shift dimensions. Once out of the cave again, the Engineer pings B.O.B. to recall her and the audio file she had recovered. Later she is found in the mining hub following the Chief Engineer wherever she goes.

Personality-wise; B.O.B. is quite high-strung and anxious, but is also rather attentive to the Chief Engineer and seems to rarely leave her side. She speaks with what sounds to be a Brooklyn accent.

J.I.M.[]

J.I.M

Science Bot J.I.M.

J.I.M. is the second utility Science Bot of the Chief Engineer that Rivet encounters. The bot is found in an old research lab facility, a place the Engineer says he would likely head first. J.I.M. greets Rivet and frequently asks to be friends, although Rivet initially denies him and sends him back to the Chief Engineer. He later escorts Rivet and Clank to the drill and asks again if Rivet is his new best friend, to which she hesitantly says sure. He informs them that dimensional integrity could have affected the drill, but he does not expound on this, as he does not want to worry them. He departs with them at the hydraulic pump while Clank goes to repair a dimensional anomaly. While Rivet is fighting the Goons-4-Less and trying to stop the drill from destroying the planet, J.I.M. calls them on their communicator to ask them to please not die. Once the crisis is averted, he can be found in the middle of the mining hub where he will follow Rivet around and make friendly conversation, reciting a "best friend song" for Rivet, comprised of off-tune beeping and mentioning he had bought her a cake but had been eaten by one of the miners. He remarks that the miners are much friendlier now after the planet was saved, but maintains that the inclusion of his new friends would not replace Rivet.

J.I.M. is very sociable and is always looking to make new friends wherever he goes, a habit that often distracts him from his assignments by the Chief Engineer. He however is very overly keen to try and please those he perceives as his friends, liking and disliking what they would in an attempt to always gratify them. He also attempts to make music for those he considers friends by verbally creating a series of beeps and whistles. He has a sad noises suite saved that he plays when unhappy, he deleted it when he became friends with Rivet but reacquired it again later.

S.A.M.[]

S.A.M

Science Bot S.A.M.

S.A.M. is the third and final utility Science Bot of the Chief Engineer that Rivet encounters. The bot is found at an abandoned site on a defunct drill platform, near where dimensional rifts had opened. Upon reaching the platform, S.A.M. will engage what she designates as a charming accent, which sounds to be that of a thick Texan dialect, and returns to the Chief Engineer with what she says is an important message.

The Chief Engineer notes that S.A.M. is always trying to find herself and evidently is trying out different accents to do so. After the danger posed by the drill is stopped by Rivet, S.A.M. can be found flying around in circles over the mining hub.

Junk Bot[]

Junk Bot is a utility robot residing at the Kedaro Station. He and his counterpart appear on the two different dimensional versions of Cordelion.
