Tetramites are creatures in A Crack in Time. They are small insects that travel in swarms around their tetramite nests,[1] and will attack Ratchet if he approaches, quickly draining his health. Tetramites love Breegus nectar. Tetramites appear on Lumos, Zanifar, and in the Agorian Battleplex challenge "The Exterminator"; it is said that "death by tetramite" is the noblest death for an agorian warrior.[2]
Tetramites are not typical enemies, as they are impervious to damage and will spawn continuously from their nests. Instead, the OmniSoaker is used to dispense Breegus nectar, either to distract the tetramites or to deploy them for other purposes. Specifically, tetramites can be lured to voltan ivy to scare the ivy away and allow Ratchet to reach places blocked by the ivy;[1] in other cases, it can be used to lure tetramites to attack enemies instead of Ratchet. Tetramites also hate water,[3] meaning Ratchet can avoid them by passing pools or streams of water.
Behind the scenes[]
While spelt "Tetramite" in-game, the A Crack in Time Strategy Guide had the spelling "Tetramyte".[4]
The tetramites in A Crack in Time were based on a similar enemy named "The Swarm" from Insomniac Games' previous title Resistance 2. While The Swarm was a flying mass of tiny enemies, the tetramites were adapted to instead crawl along the ground, eating Breegus nectar and anything else that got in their way. The tetramites were made to be a creature that was naturally a part of the level environment, and a hazard that made creative use of gadgets, adding to the puzzle element of the series and making gameplay more diverse.[5]
