Savali is a planet featured in Rift Apart, located in Rivet's dimension. The planet is home to the Urfdah Mesa, which is the site of an ancient lombax outpost, and inhabited by a peaceful tribe of monks. It is also the home of the self-exiled warbot Kit, and the Plumber's son Gary.
An unseen counterpart of the planet also exists in Ratchet and Clank's dimension.
History[]
Before Rift Apart[]
Snivelakian pilgrims[]
Generations ago in Rivet's dimension, a number of denizens from it's version of planet Snivelak in the Bogon Galaxy emigrated to Savali. These settlers became a tribe of monks and dedicated themselves to peaceful lifestyles with their descendents still inhabiting the planet up to the events of Rift Apart. They are the outliers to the rest of their race who instead devote themselves to physical prowess and bounty hunting as part of the Thugs/Goons-4-Less.
Lombax outpost[]
After the Great War with the cragmites, the lombaxes of Ratchet's dimension used their Dimensionator to begin exploring other dimensions and set up research outposts on planets in these other universes to further study the intricacies of the multiverse and interdimensional travel. In Rivet's dimension many years prior to either Ratchet's or Rivet's births, the lombaxes built one such outpost on planet Savali and the Interdimensional Archives to store their discovered knowledge. When they suddenly fled to their new dimension, the Savali monks took on the task of maintaining them and learned a great deal from its contents.
Gary's rise to prophet[]
The Plumber's son Gary; a lifelong student of the mysteries of the multiverse and a member of the Savali monk tribe, remarks that the Archives are the greatest repository of dimensional knowledge he has ever seen. The greatly spiritually attuned Savali monks studied this vast dimensional knowledge and with it gained special abilities, including being able to freely open rudimentary rifts in space, similar to the capabilities of the Dimensionator, but to a far lesser degree. Gary was given the title of "Prophet" by the Savali monks after he helped them decipher some of their Archives. This was done by him explaining to them what various miscellaneous things were; such as a blargian phone book, kerchu tooth or terraklon love poem.
KT-7461's self-exile[]
After maiming an intruder in Nefarious City, the warbot KT-7461 exiled herself to Savali in her shame and attempted to keep herself hidden on the remote world so as to not bring harm to anyone again. She joined the local Savali monks where she became a trusted sister in their tribe and Gary saw much potential in her. Eventually she was appointed as his apprentice and for several years worked often with him inside the Archives. They spent this time maintaining and building its contents together, with KT-7461 being trained to learn the secrets of dimensionality and the multiverse, similar to how the Plumber had mentored Gary.
Shortly before the events of Rift Apart began, the Plumber announced he was going on his first ever vacation and entrusted responsibilities of watching over the dimensions to his son Gary.
Rift Apart[]
The coming dimensional cataclysm[]
After the Dimensionator was destroyed following Dr. Nefarious' plan to steal it and transport himself, Ratchet and Clank to Rivet's dimension, a gradual collapse of the dimensions began occurring which would eventually culminate in a total dimensional cataclysm. With this crisis at hand, Gary took to deep meditation and used astral projection to search for heroes to help. In a space between dimensions caused by the Dimensionator's destruction, Gary met Clank inside a dimensional anomaly on Sargasso. Here Gary assisted Clank with repairing the anomaly and told him that he lives on Savali, studying in the Interdimensional Archives.
Ratchet seeks help on Savali[]
Later while Ratchet, Clank and Rivet are devising a plan to build a new Dimensionator at Zurkie's to reverse the dimensional damage, Clank recalls that Gary had mentioned he lives on planet Savali helping maintain the Archives, with Ratchet volunteering to go and find if Gary can help them.
Ratchet arrives on the planet and quickly runs into Gary who recognizes him from his research on Clank's history in his book. He instructs Ratchet to make his way to the Interdimensional Archives just past the Monks' settlement and find his apprentice, who can help him with building a Dimensionator. The Nefarious Troopers however have arrived on the planet and are attacking Monktown while searching for a Lombax. Ratchet destroys the occupying troopers and makes his way to the Archives, however the structure detects an interdimensional anomaly and enters it's defensive mode; rising up on it's robotic legs to walk itself away from any danger.
Ratchet meets KT-7461[]
Upon it rising, a small robot falls from the top and lands in front of Ratchet and he realizes she is Gary's apprentice. To get back up to the Archives and acquire the Dimensionator blueprints, Ratchet suggests to her that they team up but she is quite reluctant and insists she would not make a good partner. Ratchet makes a deal with her that in the event something goes wrong which he assures won't, they will go their seperate ways with no questions asked. She agrees but maintains their alliance is only temporary.
Rescuing the monks[]
To get onto the Archives again they will need help from the monks, Gary's acolytes. They however have been taken prisoner at their three temples by the invading Nefarious Troopers and placed inside force fields. The apprentice gives Ratchet a pair of Lombax Hoverboots that will allow him to quickly traverse across the planet's Urfdah Mesa. Ratchet recalls he did not catch her name and she meekly introduces herself as KT-7461. They free the monks at the Badlands Temple and at the Primeval Forest Temple, where Ratchet defends KT-7461 from waves of troopers while she disables the force fields through it's access terminal. Whilst travelling between the temples, Ratchet proposes giving KT-7461 a nickname but she is unsure about his suggestions. The Mountain Temple required Ratchet to pass a series of dangerous time trials in order to ascend to the top quickly with his Hoverboots or the track he is on would collapse. After destroying the Nefarious Sniperbots guarding the monks at the mountain's summit, KT-7461 found the forcefield's access terminal was infected with Zeta Viruses and using it would cause her to be infected aswell. Ratchet sent Glitch in to clear out the viruses and bring the machinery back online, allowing KT-7461 to free the monks.
Obtaining the Dimensionator blueprints[]
Once all of the monks are freed, Ratchet gets warped back to Monktown through one of their rifts and Gary works with his acolytes to open a path through multiple rifts, allowing Ratchet to boost with great speed up to the top of the Archives. Upon reaching the Archives however, they discover that the Nefarious Troopers are already there, seeking to plunder it's contents to present to the Emperor and convert the structure into a war machine. Whilst fighting them off, KT-7461 frets that some of the Archive's contents are irreplacable and the troopers might damage them. Ratchet succeeds in destroying the attacking troopers and powers up the Helix Generator to open the rift into the Archive's vault. Inside, KT-7461 is relieved that the Dimensional Map and the rest of the contents are safe. Ratchet discovers Lombax language writing inside the vault and confides in KT-7461 that his father Kaden was the keeper of the original Dimensionator and lamented that he couldn't keep it out of the wrong hands like his father wished. After scanning the Dimensionator blueprints, KT-7461 informs Ratchet that the only place with the facilities powerful enough to create it are at the Emperor's Kedaro Station on planet Cordelion; the most secure outpost in the galaxy. She then decides that of Ratchet's name suggestions, she liked Kit the most and began using it from that point forward.
Kit's secret[]
Suddenly several Nefarious Dropships began bombing the Archives to destroy it, forcing Kit to very reluctantly transform into her aggressive Warbot form to ward off the attackers. She then points her weapon at Ratchet but snaps back to her senses and transforms back. She dourly explains to Ratchet that she was a creation of the Nefarious Empire and built to be a powerful weapon to keep the Emperor's galaxy secure. She was naively manipulated by the Emperor and fled her role in great shame after she severely injured someone on one of her patrols. Years ago she exiled herself to the remote planet Savali to keep others safe from her own destructive capabilities and devoted her life to building and preserving knowledge in the Archives with the local monk tribe. Ratchet is not soured by this however and wants Kit to continue travelling with him as a team. She is surprised at this but hesitantly accepts and remarks that she will continue to try. Once the Archives are safe, Kit and Ratchet leave for planet Cordelion to use the Kedaro station's Rubion Forge to build a new Dimensionator.
Hunt for Lorbs (optional)[]
Whilst traveling the Urfdah Mesa, Ratchet encounters a monk scholar at a remote outpost who offers to reward him with wasteland armor pieces in exchange for collecting Lombax Lorbs found across the region. Three for the Wasteland Leg Armor, seven for the Wasteland Chest Armor and all twelve for the Wasteland Helmet. The Lorbs are contained within Lombax shrines and will only activate in the presence of a Lombax. Ratchet agrees and sets off to retrieve them. The Lorbs themselves are discovered to be Lombax devices for storing information and contain the audio diary of a Lombax named Mags as he creates the Dimensional Map. After all are found, the scholar expresses his excitement at studying the recovered Lorbs and adding them to the Archives. Another monk scholar in Monktown suggests they design their architecture to be spherical, perhaps an influence of the globular Lorbs.
The Emperor's new goal[]
While Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Kit are on their way back to Zurkie's to meet up again, a public broadcast from Emperor Nefarious plays. After sending Quantum to Zordoom and believing he had trapped Rivet in a pocket dimension, he announces that he is now rid of the last of his enemies and the galaxy is finally his. After the broadcast is ended, Ratchet and Clank use Quantum's helmet to continue listening into the Emperor's talks in his office. The Emperor feels depressed that he seemingly now has everything he sought to accomplish in his life but does not feel any different for it. He however soon concluded that the true reason for his dissatisfaction is that he has not yet conquered all dimensions in existence. To do this first he needs to find them and makes his next move to steal the Dimensional Map from the Interdimensional Archives. Upon hearing this; Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Kit change their ship's course and head to Savali after the Emperor.
Invasion of the undead goons[]
Ratchet and Clank arrive at the planet first and regretfully inform Rivet and Kit that Nefarious had gotten there before them and has destroyed the Archives. The Nefarious Troopers attempt to stop anyone from entering the Archives and Ratchet defeats them. The Emperor's overuse of the Dimensionator had been causing the boundaries between the universes to begin coming undone, allowing skeletal creatures from a nightmare dimension to break into Rivet's dimension through rifts. These undead monsters indiscriminately attacked both the troopers and Ratchet and appeared to be counterparts of the Goons-4-Less. Ratchet nicknamed them Bone Goons. Upon breaking through both the troopers and undead Goons, Ratchet and Clank entered the Archives' vault and found that the map was missing. The two contacted Rivet and Kit just as they arrived at the planet and informed them that the Emperor must have gotten there first. Rivet flew her ship up to the Emperor's Flagship and assured they would get it back. Kit asked if Gary and the Savali Monks were safe and Ratchet in turn stated he and Clank would find them.
The Emperor's flagship[]
Rivet and Kit sneak onto the Emperor's ship and fight their way up to the upper levels to find Nefarious and the map, but instead they find Gary being held prisoner. After freeing him, Gary explains the Emperor had him captured after he and the monks hid the map inside of a dimensional anomaly to keep it out of his reach. However, with the Emperor using the Dimensionator so recklessly to open rifts everywhere, it would only be a matter of time before he finds it. Rivet and Kit relay this to Ratchet and Clank, who then make their way out of the wrecked Archives to the Urfdah Mesa.
The catacombs[]
While Rivet and Kit get Gary out of the ship to safety, Ratchet and Clank make their way to the anomaly inside the planet's catacombs. To reach them, they first need to activate the Excavation Towers by using three nearby pressure locks, all while combating relentless numbers of undead goons. Once this is done, the excavation machine's laser is activated and a path underground to the catacombs entrance is created. Ratchet and Clank enter the catacombs, ride a Speetle through the aqueducts filled with green goo and eventually reach the chamber containing the anomaly. The other monks here have found the rift to the skeletal ceatures' dimension and they ask Ratchet to hold them back while they seal the portal the army of undead are emerging from. Once the Undead Grunthor and Bone Goons are defeated, the monks close the rift and Clank makes his way to the anomaly to now retrieve the map. Clank repairs the anomaly on his own as Gary is not present and he finally learns enough about dimensionality to stop the Cataclysm. All he needs now is the Dimensionator to reverse the damage that has been done.
Retrieving the Dimensional Map[]
Clank retrieves the Dimensional Map but finds that the two Nefariouses were waiting for him. The Emperor holds Ratchet by the throat and threatens to kill him if Clank does not give him the map. He very reluctantly hands it over to Dr. Nefarious and the Emperor sends both of them through a rift to be incarcerated at Zordoom Prison, where he gloats he will be hosting a viewing party of all his victories. Rivet and Kit arrive just as the Emperor inserts the map into the Dimensionator. With no options left, Kit turns into her warbot mode and Rivet is horrified to discover her new friend was the same assailant that caused her to lose her arm years ago. Kit mournfully turns away from her, knowing this revelation would destroy their budding friendship and she makes a dash towards the Emperor, shooting the Dimensionator out of his hand. He cowers in fear when a rift is suddenly opened behind Kit and she is sucked inside and sent to Zordoom aswell, with the Emperor left looking confused at what had happened. It is then revealed that Dr. Nefarious quickly used the Dimensionator and had saved the Emperor's life. The Emperor then snatches the Dimensionator back from him, opens a rift and roughly pushes the Doctor inside before jumping in himself. Rivet looks at the scene before her in despair whilst clutching her robot arm then despondently throws it to the ground. Overlooking the Urfdah Mesa, Rivet returns to her ship feeling painfully shellshocked over what had just happened. After a moment she gathers herself, activates her ship and leaves the planet towards Viceron to try and free her imprisoned friends.
After Rivet breaks Ratchet, Clank and Kit out of captivity at Zordoom Prison, Kit vows to return to her isolation on Savali and dissolves her partnership with Rivet after the two have a heated argument. The monks back on Savali however mention Kit had not been back yet. Kit later returns to save Rivet when Emperor Nefarious invades Ratchet and Clank's dimension and the two eventually defeat him and his armies together.
Credits[]
In the ending credits sequence of Rift Apart; Ratchet, Clank and Talwyn are seen together inside the Savali Archives where they return the Dimensional Map to it's pedestal. Earlier, whilst standing on a balcony in Monktown, Ratchet comments that he wishes Talwyn could be there to see Savali with him, and so he brings her to the planet here. Ratchet looks into one of the map's holographic viewscreens and sees the Archives' exterior.
Outside the Archives, Rivet and Kit are then seen with Gary and the monks where they assist in fixing the damages caused by the Emperor during his invasion. The Archives here are also shown to be thoroughly repaired and has regained it's defensive walking capability again after the Emperor's attacks disabled it.
Geography[]
Overview[]
Savali neighbours a number of other celestial objects, the most pronounced of which is the large nearby and unnamed ringed planet seen in the skies. The climate of Savali is fairly dry, however there are plentiful water sources and plantlife found throughout. Savali plantlife is typically red and purple in color. Aswell as crimson forests and grasslands, many giant mushrooms can be found, with some having strong bouncing properties for Ratchet to jump on. Many tall, skyscraping rock formations are seen across the planet with the Urfdah Mesa itself sitting high above Savali's surface. The planet is the site of an ancient Lombax outpost, containing a great deal of advanced knowledge on dimensionality. The monks that reside here are the descendants of pilgrims from this dimension's version of the Bogon Galaxy, that have chosen to devote themselves to peaceful, spiritual learnings and preserving knowledge in their archives, including blueprints for the Dimensionator and the dimensional map. They are the outliers to the rest of their race, who instead are devoted to physical prowess and bounty hunting. With the Lombaxes having abandoned it long ago, the monks are the keepers of their most treasured secrets on dimensional knowledge and also a really good snivelakian bean hummus recipe. Some of the Lombax technology on the planet is still operational and built directly into the planet. These defenses were utilized by the Nefarious Troopers during their invasion and used to create force fields to imprison the Savali Monks. Amongst the planet's wildlife are the Plains Beasts, the invasive Sandsharks and their nests, Savali Spitters, flocks of Darters and Thwogs that dwell in Urfdah Mesa's catacombs.
The planet contains many audio recordings contained in objects known as Lorbs, left behind by a Lombax named Mags, in which he describes the process he went through to map all the dimensions in existence and create the dimensional map. They will only activate in the presence of a Lombax, meaning the monks are unable to use them. Only when Ratchet arrives and collects them are they able to be deciphered and listened to.
Locations[]
- Monktown is the home settlement of the Savali Monks located just south-west adjacent to the Urfdah Mesa.
- The Badlands make up the majority of the Urfdah Mesa, covering the entire west and north half of the landmass. The flat terrain in the west is mostly dry but with shallow bodies of water. Several old pieces of Lombax machinery litter this area. The northern and north-eastern region is much more eroded with numerous canyons and high rock formations.
- Wedged between the Urfdah Mesa and Monktown sits the Interdimensional Archives. However, upon detecting an interdimensional anomaly, the Archives activated it's defensive mode and extended it's four robotic legs to walk itself across the Mesa badlands away from danger. Only when threats are neutralized will the Archives cease this function.
- Inside a rift stablized atop the Archives is its interior which contains the great Vault of Knowledge accumulated by both the Lombaxes and Savali Monks. Housed here is a wealth of information on dimensionality, including the Dimensionator blueprints and a copy of the Dimensonal Map.
- The Temple D'Badlands or more commonly known as the Badlands Temple, is located on the dry plains at the north-west of the Urfdah Mesa. It is one of three temples the monks congregate at. The Temple is actually a large excavation drill left by the Lombaxes that is activated by three nearby pressure locks. Because of this it is also known as the Earth Piercer Temple. Once activated, the drill's laser will break open the ground leading to the planet's catacombs. When the force field systems beneath it are active, the top of the temple emits a red beam of energy particles with lightning-like arcs.
- Just beneath the Badlands Temple is the Catacombs Entrance which is unlocked with a boltcrank.
- The Catacombs under the Urfdah Mesa are a large series of cavernous aqueducts filled with green goo of an unknown origin. Gary mentions the goo is a by-product of something but does not explain what and maintains it is not important.
- At the heart of the Urfdah Mesa on it's badlands is a remote Outpost of the monks. A Monk Scholar found here tasks Ratchet with finding Lorbs and rewards him with Wasteland Armor pieces for them. He is one of the tribe's senior archivists who greatly wishes to learn from the Lorbs and add them to the Archive's vault for preservation.
- Just next to the Outpost are the rejuvenating, natural Hot Springs. Three Robotic Citizens that got pulled through a rift from Nefarious City to Savali can be found relaxing here.
- On the east side of the Urfdah Mesa is the Primeval Forest; also known as the Crimson Forest. It is a densely wooded area filled with red-leaved trees and giant mushrooms with a river flowing through it.
- Just past the forest at the farthest east point of the Mesa is the Primeval Forest Temple; also known as the Crimson Forest Temple. It is one of three temples the monks congregate at. When the force field systems beneath it are activate, the top of the temple emits a yellow beam of energy particles.
- Covering the south-east are the Plains. This area is just south of the Crimson Forest with a gorge seperating the two. It is mostly flat grassland with multiple water sources and vegetation. Roaming this region are the docile Plains Beasts.
- Just beyond the farthest south point of the Urfdah Mesa is a lone towering mountain. At the snowy, foggy summit sits the Mountain Temple; also known as the Great Rock Temple. It is one of three temples the monks congregate at. When the force field systems beneath it are activate, the top of the temple emits two forked, cyan colored beams of energy particles. A defense system for the temple requires people to pass four speed based courses before the raised path beneath them collapses. Ratchet uses his hoverboots to make it in time and reaches the mountain summit. Gary and the Savali Monks refer to this defense system as the Gauntlet of Trials Slash Doom.
- At the farthest north-east point of the Mesa is a Cavern hidden inside it's large rock formations. Inside is the old wreck of a crashed Space Pirate ship. The Space Pirates are known to frequent Savali's space sector. A Spybot is found on the ship's deck, however it is booby-trapped and collecting it activates a group of hidden Cutlassies to suddenly attack.
- In the north-east region of the Mesa, hidden in a hollow is the Crash Site of a raritanium train shipment. This cargo train, as well as several Nefarious Troopers were pulled through a rift from Nefarious City and crashed onto Savali.
Behind the scenes[]
When Ratchet first arrives on Savali he finds Gary flipping through the pages of his father's book of universal knowledge. The cover of the book has the words "how to" written multiple times in both alien languages seen in Rift Apart. Three unique pages can also be seen inside the book which illustrate events of both the past and future. Incidents seen include Rivet's attempted break in to Nefarious Tower and her subsequent attack from Kit in which the Lombax lost her arm, Dr. Nefarious escaping in his Party Crasher mech in Megalopolis when the front parade float is ripped in half, the Kraken Bubbles destroying the Space Pirate Scuttler on Ardolis, Emperor Nefarious feeling depressed that he seemingly has nothing left to accomplish, Rivet and Kit flying their ship up to the Emperor's Flagship and finally Ratchet and Clank are seen examining the Dimensional Map in the Archives. However, the alien language writing seen on the pages here does not translate into anything intelligible.
The scene of the wrecked pirate ship with the Spybot on it's deck is very similar to the scene inside Morrow Caverns on Merdegraw, where Angstrom Darkwater's ship is also found left ontop of a tall rock formation in a large cave with some beams of sunlight shining inside.
Some of the Lombax writing on the Lorbs can be be translated to saying "For Honor".
In the Lorbs' archive logs, the dimensions described in log entries III, IV, V, VII, and IX refer to PlayStation Studios properties Sly Cooper, Knack, I.Q.: Intelligent Qube, Jak and Daxter, and LittleBigPlanet.
Mags' description of Jak and Daxter's world as Jak "firing a gun and spinning himself around every other second" refers to a common combo in the game in which players can jump + spin + shoot to fire their weapon in a circle around them.
Inside each level of Rift Apart are hidden easter eggs in the form of a dark orb with the logo of Insomniac Games marked on them. Some major locations also have more than one. The logo was intended to be a sky blue color the same as the official Insomniac Games' logo, but due to a graphical glitch it appears as a mix of blues and purples. They are not related in anyway to game progression or trophies and are simply placed in out of view locations for players to happen upon as pieces of the level environment. When they are hit by a weapon, a burst of confetti will emit from them and they will freely roll around the area. If the player refreshes the area, they will be reset again. On Savali, an orb can be found at the base of the Mountain Temple, on a ledge just above the switch for the first time trial.
