The Rift Inducer 5000 is a weapon manufactured by GrummelNet Industries in A Crack in Time, with minor appearances in other installments of the series. The Rift Inducer 5000 opens a portal to another dimension, from which the tentacles of an interdimensional monster (named "Fred" by the GrummelNet engineers) pull enemies in.
The Rift Inducer 5000 can be upgraded to the Rift Ripper 5000 through use. In challenge mode, players can purchase the Omega Rift Ripper 5000.
History[]
The Rift Inducer 5000 shares the same technology as the Dimensionator.[1] It was designed to fill a "death-by-interdimensional-being" niche, summoning a being named "Fred" by GrummelNet engineers.[2]
Although it shares a name and function with the Gadgetron Rift Inducer, no explicit connection between the two weapons is established.
The Rift Inducer 5000 appeared in Ears of War and Multiple Organisms on the wall of Ratchet's garage in Veldin.[3][4]
Characteristics[]
The Rift Inducer 5000 is a small blue pistol with a short barrel and a simple trigger. Its upgraded form, the Rift Ripper 5000, is a golden pistol. When fired, both weapons create a horizontal portal in midair, from which large, green, spiked tentacles belonging to "Fred" emerge to pull enemies in. One of Fred's eyestalks is also visible through the portal, and it locks onto enemies before pulling them in.
The Rift Ripper 5000 removes the weapon's Lorentzian stabilizer, causing rifts to explode when they close.[1]
Gameplay[]
A Crack in Time[]
The Rift Inducer 5000 is available for purchase upon reaching the Nefarious Space Station for 91,000 bolts. At V5, it upgrades to the Rift Ripper 5000. In challenge mode, the Omega Rift Ripper 5000 can be purchased for 491,000 bolts.
The Rift Inducer 5000 creates a portal from which Fred's tentacles slap enemies, pulling them into the rift if the slap would otherwise kill them. This makes the weapon effective at dealing with groups over a larger area, particularly in the late game. However, due to its limited ammo capacity and 10-second duration, it is best used against large groups of agorians or Nefarious Troopers, rather than small groups or weaker enemies.
When upgraded to the Rift Ripper 5000, the weapon adds an explosion effect when the rift expires, providing additional damage to any surviving enemies.
Before the Nexus[]
In Before the Nexus, the Rift Inducer 5000, shortened to simply "Rift Inducer," is available as a power-up. It must be unlocked with bolts and can be upgraded twice to extend its duration. The weapon pulls in all enemies and crates, releasing bolts upon expiration.
