Armor is a collectible in Rift Apart that also serves as a gameplay mechanic. Unlike armor in previous games, armor in Rift Apart is primarily cosmetic, customizing the appearance of Ratchet and Rivet based on one of the sets. Collecting a full set of armor will in most cases grant a permanently available bonus. If Ratchet or Rivet are wearing a helmet that covers their mouth, their voices will be muffled.
There are eighteen sets of armor in total in Rift Apart, of which each set has three pieces: helmet, chest, and boots. A mix of these pieces can be used together without requiring the entire set to be completed. A number of these armor pieces are found inside collectibles called Armor Pods. Most Armor Pods are found in optional pocket dimensions. Eight of these full armor sets provide a collection bonus, such as reducing damage taken from certain enemy types, or increasing raritanium or bolts earned by a percentage.
There are eight sets to be collected in Rift Apart with five additional sets available as part of the game's digital deluxe edition. Standard editions of Rift Apart will offer players the option to upgrade to the deluxe edition from the title menu for an additional cost, granting them the bonus content including the five armor sets. These additional five armor sets however do not grant any gameplay bonuses like the ones collected in-game. Each piece of armor can have its color scheme customized, with twenty options to choose from.
Acquiring one piece of armor unlocks the bronze trophy Sartorial Steel; acquiring and equipping a piece of head, torso, and leg armor unlocks the silver trophy Does This Make My Tail Look Big?.

Behind the scenes[]
As part of a pre-order incentive, the Carbonox armor is included for early access but does not grant any gameplay bonuses and is merely cosmetic. As the Carbonox Advanced armor pieces are collected, they will replace the standard Carbonox armor. The Carbonox armor and Carbonox Advanced armor are visually identical.
As part of the 20th anniversary of the Ratchet and Clank franchise, five additional armor sets were released for free to all owners of Rift Apart through a software update. Most of these armor sets are of outfits from several previous games in the series. Same as the five deluxe edition armor sets, these extra five do not grant any gameplay bonuses.
Months prior to Rift Apart's release, Insomniac Games held an online poll for fans of the Ratchet and Clank franchise to vote for their favorite armor in the series. The Carbonox armor from Going Commando was the winner with the most votes and as a result it was featured in Rift Apart as a pre-order bonus and part of the deluxe edition for early access. Insomniac Games confirmed it can be obtained in Rift Apart even without the pre-order and in the standard game as the Carbonox Advanced armor.
