An Armor Pod.

Armor is a collectible and gameplay mechanic in Rift Apart. Unlike in previous installments, armor in Rift Apart is primarily cosmetic, allowing players to customize the appearance of Ratchet and Rivet. Despite being cosmetic, collecting a full set usually grants a permanent passive bonus. Additionally, wearing a helmet that covers the character's mouth will cause their voice lines to sound muffled.

There are eighteen armor sets in total, each consisting of three pieces: a helmet, chest, and boots. Players can mix and match individual pieces without losing their set bonuses, as these bonuses are unlocked permanently upon acquisition. Many armor pieces are found within Armor Pods, which are typically located inside optional pocket dimensions. Eight of these sets provide specific gameplay benefits, such as damage reduction against certain enemy types or increased yields of raritanium and bolts.

While eight sets are found in-game, five additional sets are included in the Digital Deluxe Edition. Players with the Standard Edition can upgrade at any time to unlock this content. Unlike the sets found in the base game, these five bonus sets do not provide gameplay benefits. Every armor piece features twenty customizable color schemes.

Acquiring a single armor piece unlocks the bronze trophy "Sartorial Steel", while equipping a full set (head, torso, and leg armor) unlocks the silver trophy "Does This Make My Tail Look Big?".

Behind the scenes[]

Digital Deluxe Edition armor pack (top), Carbonox armor early unlock (middle), and the 20th Anniversary armor pack (bottom).

The Carbonox armor was offered as a pre-order incentive for early access. While it is purely cosmetic, it is visually identical to the Carbonox Advanced set; once collected, the Advanced pieces replace the standard version in the menu.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, five additional armor sets based on classic outfits were released for free via a software update. Like the Digital Deluxe sets, these anniversary armors provide no gameplay bonuses.

Prior to the game's release, Insomniac Games held a fan poll to determine the franchise's favorite armor. The Carbonox armor from Going Commando won the vote, leading to its inclusion as a pre-order bonus. Insomniac later confirmed the set could be obtained through standard gameplay as the Carbonox Advanced armor.
