Greg Baldwin is a former artist at wikipedia:Insomniac Games, working at the studio from 2000 to 2019. In the Ratchet & Clank series, he worked on Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, Deadlocked, Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, A Crack in Time, All 4 One, Into the Nexus, and Ratchet & Clank (2016 game). He later founded Lost Bear Studios, a visual development house.

An email was sent to him to ask him about his work for Ace Hardlight.

For Ace: The description was basically a big hot headed brute who was basically the captain of some gladiators. Think Running Man. We wanted Ratchet to feel personally threatened by him emotionally, so we wanted him to be a similar race, so he didn't come across as just another thug Ratchet had to beat.

We toyed with making him a lombax, but in the end, kind of a lombax, but not exactly one seemed better. Then we kept it vague in the game so that if we wanted to revisit that issue, we hadn't painted ourselves into a corner.

I wish I could say there was more to him, but those production days were filled with fast turn-arounds and lots of things to do. The story and character development evolved as the game did. Everyone added there[sic] own little bits.

These days, we think through this stuff more.

And yes, I did also design Gleeman, the news anchors. Tell you friends thanks.
