The RYNO, also stylized as R.Y.N.O. (an abbreviation for Rip Ya A New One) is the first weapon in the RYNO series, a series of extremely powerful missile launcher weapons. It was developed by Gadgetron Corporation,[1] and appears in Ratchet & Clank, Going Mobile, Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, and both the re-imagined game and re-imagined movie. The R.Y.N.O. is an extremely powerful and rare missile launcher that can fire up to 9 per launch, each of which target specific enemies.

In Size Matters, and Secret Agent Clank, the weapon upgrades to the RYNOCERATOR. In Ratchet & Clank, it upgrades to the RYNO Xtreme!.

History

Creation

The R.Y.N.O. was originally created by Gadgetron, as the ultimate in tactical offensive weaponry, but was deemed too dangerous for civilian use, and thus was only sold on black market vendors and never became available in a Gadgetron vendor.[1] At the time of creation, it was the most powerful missile launcher in the galaxy.[2]

Ratchet & Clank

In Ratchet & Clank, the RYNO is sold by the black market Shady Salesman in Blackwater City on Rilgar for 150,000. Ratchet and Clank meet the salesman on the way to the Hoverboard games, who calls them over offering to sell the RYNO. Clank suggests that the salesman stole the weapon from the blarg, who responds very defensively,[2] suggesting that Clank's suspicions were true. At the time the weapon is sold, the player is very unlikely to earn 150,000 bolts, or even to earn that many in their first play-through, meaning a purchase on a second or third play-through is far more likely.

The weapon, according to Clank, was the strongest missile launcher in Solana during the events of the game.[2] This may suggest that later iterations of the RYNO were yet to be developed or released. Though the RYNO II in Going Commando is a more powerful launcher, sold at a vendor that is implied to have operated for years, this weapon featured in the Bogon and not Solana, suggesting that the RYNO could still have been the most powerful weapon in Solana. It could also suggest the RY3NO was yet to be developed or manufactured. Furthermore, later installments in the RYNO series — notably the RYNO IV and onward — were made illegal, so for Clank to be unaware of the weapons is also a possibility.

Purchase of the weapon in the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of Ratchet & Clank will unlock the silver trophy Ultimate Animal.

Re-imagined

The 2016 re-imagined game is primarily an unreliable retelling of events by Qwark.
The re-imagined game primarily describes Captain Qwark's account of events. As Qwark is an unreliable narrator, and contradictory events are in-universe fiction (though those which correspond still apply). Please see Project:Bulletin board/Canon for the wiki's coverage of canon.

You've had this one coming a long time, Qwark! Of all my brilliant creations, it remains one of my favorites. Meet the RYNO, as in, Rip You a New One!

Nefarious to Qwark, movie

In Qwark's retelling and the holofilm, the RYNO was created by Dr. Nefarious while affiliated with the blarg. The R.Y.N.O. here has the appearance of the RYNO IV from Tools of Destruction, but the functionality of the RYNO V from A Crack in Time, firing missiles at rapid fire, though quickly consuming its ammo.

In Qwark's retelling, Ratchet obtained the weapon from the Shady Salesman in Blackwater City on Rilgar after giving him all the R.Y.N.O. Holocards, at which point Ratchet is granted the weapon for free. The weapon upgraded to the RYNO Xtreme! with use, and could be upgraded with Raritanium, particularly to improve its ammo capacity.

In challenge mode, the Omega RYNO Xtreme! may be purchased from a vendor for 1,000,000. When meeting the Shady Salesman on playthroughs with the weapon equipped, he will instead identify Ratchet and Clank as possessing the R.Y.N.O., and request a picture with them, to which the confused Ratchet will oblige.

In the holofilm, Nefarious aimed to use the weapon to kill Captain Qwark in the Deplanetizer after the former's plan to destroy the galaxy was thwarted, though Ratchet wacks it with his OmniWrench before he could fire it, the weapon in turn hitting Nefarious in the face, causing him to be disintegrated as he falls through the Deplanetizer.

Going Mobile

Going Mobile is non-canon.
As Going Mobile was never installed as part of the main series, its events are considered non-canon. Please see Project:Bulletin board/Canon for the wiki's coverage of canon.
R.Y.N.O

The R.Y.N.O in Going Mobile.

The R.Y.N.O. can only be obtained after collecting all titanium bolts in both the Series 40 and 60 versions. In the former it requires all nine bolts in the game, whereas in the latter it requires thirty (although there are in fact 31). It can be upgraded to V3 with use in Series 60.

Size Matters

The RYNO is most expensive in this installment at 9,999,000 bolts. It is purchased at a vendor, on planet Quodrona in challenge mode (after Otto Destruct was defeated in a previous playthrough). By this point, the model had been drastically redesigned in appearance, although functionally it operated extremely similarly. In fact, the ammunition price was the same as in the original Ratchet & Clank.

Secret Agent Clank

Secret Agent Clank is in-universe fiction.
Secret Agent Clank is an in-universe holofilm in the Secret Agent Clank fictional series. Its events are a fictional movie within the Ratchet & Clank universe. Please see Project:Bulletin board/Canon for the wiki's coverage of canon.

The RYNO could be purchased by Clank, for Ratchet, used during his sequences. It was identical in design and functionality to Size Matters, but only cost 2,000,000 bolts, far cheaper than in the previous installment.

It was delivered to Ratchet as the "Pineapple Upside Down RYNO cake".[3] It was estimated by the Prison warden to weigh 30 pounds while being delivered in cake form.

Characteristics

R.Y.N.O

Ammo in Ratchet & Clank (2002).

In the original Ratchet & Clank, the weapon is a dark blue and mostly black weapon. Its square muzzle on the end is composed of nine different muzzles for nine missiles on each fire, with two wires attached to its larger body. The larger border contains a magazine below, which has a handlebar attached to it. Finally, it has black and yellow stripes in front of its trigger.

The R.Y.N.O. in Going Mobile resembles the RYNO II in design, complete with the main blue color, red nozzle, and yellow-black stripes on-top.

The RYNO in Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank was drastically different in appearance. Its round muzzle contained only six missiles, and the weapon was notably red. Its body was generally circular, with red marks around it. It appears more refined that the previous iteration of the weapon.

The R.Y.N.O. in the re-imagined Ratchet & Clank featured the appearance of the RYNO IV in Tools of Destruction. It is a small green and dark green carbine, featuring a jaw below its orange nozzle from which missiles are fired at a rapid pace, spouting off in many directions in front of the weapon, with some homing in on enemies. It also plays triumphant horn music while firing, similar to the RYNO V in A Crack in Time.

Combat

Ratchet using the RYNO against Chairman Drek

The RYNO functions similarly throughout its appearances, though it does go through several cosmetic iterations and changes a little in functionality. The RYNO targets multiple enemies in front of Ratchet, and once it fires, a missile hits each. The missiles each do major amounts of damage, meaning they are likely to destroy most enemies in front of Ratchet, regardless of their size. As an example, each missile fired in the original Ratchet & Clank is as powerful as a missile fired by the Devastator.

In the original Ratchet & Clank, once acquired, the player often has no real need to use any other weapon, unless they have run out of ammunition. This is because the RYNO is so powerful and so versatile, and its ammunition cheaper than other less powerful weapons, that there is no need to ever use another weapon against any boss or group of enemies. The player may wish to conserve ammunition and use weaker weapons against larger groups of weaker enemies, but otherwise, the RYNO is useful in all cases. The only drawback to the RYNO is that it is often acquired by the player at a point when they have finished much of the content of the game, and do not need the RYNO to overcome any new challenge.

Re-imagined

In the re-imagined Ratchet & Clank, the RYNO functions differently, having a very large maximum ammo capacity and firing its missiles rapidly, similarly to the RYNO V from A Crack in Time. Once acquired, it is easily the most powerful weapon in the game, though the player must aim it correctly to conserve ammo, as it consumes its ammo very quickly. Once upgraded with Raritanium expanding its ammo, and once fully upgraded to the RYNO Xtreme!, however, this shortcoming is entirely alleviated, and there is no reason to use another weapon. The weapon can also quickly defeat most bosses once fully upgraded.

Going Mobile

As the R.Y.N.O. resembles the RYNO II in design it also resembles it in gameplay. It is capable of rapidly firing powerful missiles, that have a mild automatic aiming function, allowing them to automatically move to a higher or lower horizontal row in order to hit enemies. Its missiles also have a small explosive area of effect on impact. All these traits combined make it the most powerful weapon in the game, especially at V3.

Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank

In Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank, the weapon is still extremely powerful and versatile, but players may still wish to use other weapons to upgrade them. It can be upgraded to the more powerful RYNOCERATOR.

Behind the scenes

The R.Y.N.O. held only 10 rounds of max ammo in early version of the first game. The amount was increased to 50 rounds in the release.[4]

In other translations of the game, the R.Y.N.O. is given a different acronym with a different meaning. For instance, in the Spanish translation, the acronym is T.A.U.N., meaning "Te Abro Una Nueva" (I Open You a New One); in French, the acronym is T.E.L.T, meaning "T'Éclater La Tronche" (Destroy Your Face in French); while in Italian, the acronym is M.I.P.S, meaning "Muori In Pochi Secondi" (Die In a Few Seconds in Italian). Many of these acronyms were kept in all subsequent games (with some exceptions, as the Italian translation was not kept).

Ultimate Animal

The Ultimate Animal trophy

In the high-definition re-release of Ratchet & Clank available standalone and in the Ratchet & Clank Collection, the player can earn the silver trophy Ultimate Animal once the R.Y.N.O. is obtained.
