Carl Lepton Quantum,[1] most commonly known as Captain Quantum, is a character who appears in Rift Apart. He is the captain of the space pirates in Rivet's dimension and the alternate dimensional counterpart to Captain Qwark. As with Qwark, Quantum is clumsy and has a penchant for disguises.
History[]
A former member of the Resistance, Quantum used to work alongside Rivet in combating Emperor Nefarious and his empire, but he longed for more action, adventure, and singing. Eventually, he left the Resistance and disguised himself as a robot to join the space pirates.[1] He eventually managed to become well respected by the Pirates and bugged the emperor in what was his greatest job.[2] This allowed Quantum and the pirates to always remain one step ahead of the emperors' plans, meaning they flourished under his leadership. Quantum was among Emperor Nefarious' hitlist of people leading the Resistance against him around the events of Rift Apart, alongside Phantom, MoyDoy, Clatchky, and Rivet.[3]
Captain Quantum since then hid on Ardolis, as his first mate, Pierre Le Fer, conducted most pirate raids. Quantum met pirates who completed the pirate trials. In "Rescue Captain Quantum", Ratchet and Clank completed the trials and met Quantum there, though after they got Quantum to remove his helmet, the other space pirates, who believed Captain Quantum was a robot, thought that Quantum had actually been beheaded, and attacked them, forcing them to work together to survive.[2]
When Ratchet and Clank told Quantum that his counterpart, Qwark, was a hero, Quantum was inspired and chose to save Ratchet and Clank when Emperor Nefarious used a portal to send Quantum to Zordoom Prison.[4] Rivet then broke Quantum out, and he led the Resistance movement thereafter. At Zurkie's, he began a plan to lure Emperor Nefarious out of hiding by disguising himself as a robot, but his plans were interrupted when Emperor Nefarious announced his invasion of Ratchet's dimension.[5] Quantum joined the battle against Emperor Nefarious there, and met his counterpart Qwark, whom he impressed when he delivered remarks against Nefarious before unleashing a ship filled with barrels of explosives at the Imperial Power Suit.[6]
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Quantum possess about the same body proportions as Qwark, having three fingers, broad shoulders and wearing a jumpsuit. However, Quantum bears a much more tan skin tone, a more noticeable cleft chin and blue eyes. Most strikingly, Quantum's suit is orange rather than green.
When disguising himself as a robot pirate, Quantum wears a pirate insignia on his chest, a large tricorn captain hat and a bucket on his head with a skull painted on it.
Personality[]
Though Quantum appears as cowardly as his counterpart Qwark, he lacks his confidence in being a hero, leading to him joining the pirates.[1] However, hearing of Qwark's past inspires him to act heroic nonetheless. Similar to Qwark, Quantum appears to desire the recognition and admiration of others.
