Pierre Le Fer is a supporting character in Rift Apart. He is an alternate dimensional version of Rusty Pete, acting as the mouthpiece of the Space Pirates and the First Mate of Captain Quantum. He has a complicated relationship with Rivet, often acting as an informant or bearer of parts for her, but also an adversary in battle.
History[]
Pre-Rift Apart[]
Pierre has been an acquaintance of Rivet's in the Space Pirates for many years and has on multiple occasions supplied her with useful parts or equipment for the Resistance. Despite this relationship, however, the two have also been adversaries on multiple occasions when the Resistance and pirates have clashed with each other as the pirates do not discriminate who they steal from during raids and will attack any who get in the way of their plundering.
Pierre has also been greatly disliked by some of the pirates for a number of reasons; from his inept cowardice to his terrible singing voice and have in the past attempted to have him executed multiple times, although in each one of these attempts he has somehow managed to foil them and escape.
Rift Apart[]
He is first encountered in Rift Apart at Zurkie's when Rivet attempts to acquire a part from him to fix Clank's broken communicator. Pierre however acts coy with her and playfully accuses her of pursuing his romantic affections while ignoring her flat insistence that he hand over the part. Eventually, Rivet loses patience with him and challenges him to a fight for it. Zurkie comes between them, reminding them that his Gastropub is a violence free zone and tells them to settle their quarrel in Zurkon Jr.'s Battleplex. Rivet battles and defeats several waves of Pierre's crew until she is set to fight the pirate himself. Despite Pierre's vain boastings, he is in fact rather cowardly and feigns a sprained ankle to avoid fighting Rivet himself and sends a pirate Marauder named François to battle in his stead. After a tense fight, Rivet eventually emerges victorious against François and Pierre bitterly throws the part to her but not before first threatening that he will get his revenge for their defeat.
Later when Rivet and Clank travel to Torren IV to request to help of The Fixer in repairing the broken Phase Quartz, the Space Pirates lead by Pierre begin invading Molonoth Gulch to raid for scrap. After being asked recently by the local Vullards to protect them from the pirate's raids, the Fixer had spent days crushing their forces but for an unknown reason broke down. The pirates were also unaware why the Fixer had broken down but were happy to take advantage of his absence. After acquiring the Hurlshot suspended from a crane, Rivet battles through several waves of pirates and defeats a Marauder named "Wee" Roger on one of the pirate's ships. Against the better advice of his crewmates, Pierre orders them to destroy the command ship to take Rivet down with it, but she narrowly manages to escape it's destruction and lands back in Little Junktown. After clearing the chasm with the Hurlshot, the pirates realize Rivet is trying to reactivate the Fixer and they launch another assault to stop her, as it would promptly put an end to their plundering. She breaks through their forces and defeats another Marauder named "Not-So-Wee" Roger, enraging Pierre and leading him to order his crew to regroup to launch a united attack on Rivet and stop her. She manages to reactivate the Fixer first but notices that he is behaving strangely, despondently proclaiming that he and everything is broken and that nothing can be fixed. The space pirates' ships begin approaching and the Fixer fires a large laser from his eye and destroys one of their vessels, forcing them to retreat.
After learning that Captain Quantum is the last rebel on Emperor Nefarious' hitlist, Ratchet and Clank travel to planet Ardolis to rescue him and under instructions from Rivet to find Pierre, who can help them find the captain before Nefarious can get to him first. Upon arriving however, they discover over the pirate's radio that Ardolis is closed for the day, as Pierre is scheduled to be executed soon for his violation of Article 4 of the Pirate Code, after destroying his own command ship on Torren IV in his earlier battle against Rivet. Ratchet and Clank hurry through the pirate's caves and barracks to save Pierre from being fed to a giant Kraken the pirate's have named Bubbles. After rescuing Pierre, he tells Ratchet and Clank that if they want an audience with Quantum they will need to complete the Pirate Trials located at Skull Mountain. He also informs them that he saw the pirates take something shiny to the Blackstar Landing bar earlier before chuckling to himself. He seems to have sent the duo to the bar to steal the other pirates' booty as an act of revenge against them for trying to have him executed. He then frees himself from his restraints and escapes the planet after the two leave.
Following Rivet's jail break at Zordoom Prison, the escapees meet back up at Zurkie's. Pierre goes here aswell after escaping his execution and announces to Rivet he is putting his troublesome days behind him to retire to a life of frivolity and living beyond his means. Emperor Nefarious soon makes a broadcast that he is invading Ratchet and Clank's dimension and Pierre decides to join their allies in going to Megalopolis to fight him.
Pierre and the pirates accompany Rivet into the city from above and keep Ratchet and Clank covered as they continue on foot. After Rivet contacts Ratchet on her communicator, Pierre tries to get his attention and brag to him of his own "admirable heroics". When the Emperor unveals his Imperial Power Suit and uses it to fight Rivet, Pierre and the pirates come to her aid and give her a lift. They bring their ship alongside a kamikaze ship loaded with explosives being piloted by Quantum with Ratchet, Clank and Qwark onboard. After Quantum delivers a heroic speech to Emperor Nefarious with Qwark's blessing, he and Qwark jump onto Pierre's ship and Ratchet steers the kamikaze ship towards the Power Suit. Ratchet jumps off the ship just before impact and it explodes into the Suit's head. The attack does not have much affect on the Suit however and Ratchet lands on some dimensionally displaced pirate structures where he continues the fight against the mech with the Space Pirates.
After destroying the Suit's biomechanical heart and escaping the chest chamber through a rit made by the Savali Monks, Ratchet and Clank are thrown to the other side of the city in the chaos. Rivet and Kit manage to defeat the Emperor and the Dimensionator is retrieved by Ratchet whilst arriving on Pierre and Quantum's ship, after the two went to find him and returned. While Clank uses the Dimensionator to finally reverse the damage that had been done to the dimensions, Qwark, Quantum and Pierre stand with their arms around eachother and watch the sight.
In the ending credits on planet Ardolis, Bubbles the kraken grasps Quantum's helmet in one of it's tentacles while a group of pirates stand around one of the creature's feeding pits, which Pierre is seen throwing an Emperor Nefarious statuette into. Finally in Zurkie's, Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Kit are seen dancing and enjoying the festivities in the crowded Gastropub while Pierre and Quantum stand at the bar drinking together.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Pierre Le Fer looks almost exactly like his counterpart Rusty Pete but instead of bearing an orange color, Pierre bears a polished sky blue color with three silver wrench-like buckles. He also has a black captain's hat with a long blue feather and most uniquely, an eyepatch with an orange X over his right eye.
Personality[]
Unlike his counterpart Rusty Pete, Pierre is much more charismatic, vain, dandy, posh, debonair, and flamboyant, especially with his French accent and mannerisms. Pierre is not as heavy of a drinker as Pete and found the nickname "Rusty" to be quite insulting. However, while Pierre likes to think of himself as a great pirate and leader, he is exceptionally cowardly, often using his larger and stronger subordinates to fight his battles for him, making poor excuses to avoid getting into direct combat himself. Even Zurkon Jr. called Pierre weak and pitiful, much to his outrage.
Though Pierre has a "sometimes friend, sometimes enemy" relationship with Resistance fighter Rivet, Pierre often likes to flirt or toy with the lombax, much to her annoyance. Though they do often end up in battles with each other, Pierre nonetheless aided Rivet in battling Emperor Nefarious. The other Space Pirates have a penchant to sometimes rhyme in a singing tone whilst speaking but Pierre often has trouble with this and is unable to think of sentences that rhyme correctly on the fly. He reveals at Zurkie's that after being a pirate, he always wanted to get into gastronomy and trade his self-proclaimed title of pirate extraordinaire, for chef extraordinaire.
Behind the scenes[]
Pierre's full name, Pierre Le Fer, is French for 'Stone Iron.' "Pierre" is the French form of "Peter", which "Pete" derives from. Iron Oxide is a form of rust, so Pierre's full name serves as a translation of "Rusty Pete" that is more fitting of his ego.
