Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I think *everyone* deserves a little subjugation.
Emperor Nefarious
The Nefarious Empire was a tyrannical sovereignty, with a stranglehold on all of the known universe in Rivet's alternate dimension . The empire was ruled by its robotic supreme leader; Emperor Nefarious, a dimensional counterpart of Dr. Nefarious. With the backing of his Nefarious Army, the evil, power-obsessed Emperor had long since subjugated all that he knows, having never been beaten and the only dissenters left being a Resistance force in the galaxy with it's most notable member being a lombax rebel named Rivet. However, even facing resistance the Empire remained undefeated and reigned victorious for many years.
The Empire is brutal in its militaristic methods, using various models of deadly, robotic enforcers to destroy or imprison all those who will not worship and obey their Emperor. All citizens living under this regime are given very little civil rights, with typical working hours being extremely long and pay being very low. When asked by Clank if she worries the people she meets are working for Emperor Nefarious, Rivet admits that pretty much everyone she meets in the universe does work for Emperor Nefarious in some shape or form,[1] with the great exceptions being Resistance fighters and space pirates.
With the defeat of Emperor Nefarious in Megalopolis, after his attempt to subjugate Ratchet and Clank's home dimension to expand his reach, the fate of the empire is unknown. However, with the Empire's armies depleted in the Emperor's efforts to destroy the heroes and the emperor being dragged to his possible demise by an angry kraken, it is likely that the empire collapsed without its emperor and the armies to maintain it. As a result, many worlds were liberated and set free, with Rivet and Kit being present at an event that saw an Emperor Nefarious statue being torn down in Nefarious City.
Another dimensional Nefarious Empire also existed in dimension ???, though this version of it was not as infallible, having lost its Kedaro Station to Juice.
History[]
Before Rift Apart[]
There is not much known about the earliest days of the Empire, but it can be deduced that the Emperor's rule has lasted since at least before Rivet was a child. During Emperor Nefarious' conquest of the known universe many years ago, he came across Rivet's foster home planet Sargasso and was so repulsed at the planet's wild, primordial state, that he quickly passed on it and decided that there were better ways to spend his time than conquering it. He also had a similar reaction to Torren IV due to the planet's dishevelled state and vast junkyards. When choosing worlds to conquer, the Emperor prioritizes planets with developed civilizations, dense populations to subjugate and rich natural resources.
The kerchu race were once workers under the Empire, harvesting gelatonium in their various refineries and plants on planets around the galaxy such as Sargasso. They were however wiped out and presumably made extinct at some point in the past for misspelling the Emperor's name on their tax returns. Another race known as the Morts then took over the kerchu's jobs, maintaining the factories in their place. Rivet had mentioned that she, as a kid worked for the Morts doing delivery runs for them at their inherited Gelatonium refineries on Sargasso and through this, came to know them and their hospitality.
Under an unknown set of circumstances, the planet of Scarstu came under attack from the Emperor and his Empire. A synthenoid robot known as Mr. Zurkon was used by the Empire to rain mass extinction on the planet and it's people. After this, the planet was then destroyed by the Emperor's forces. Mr. Zurkon then had an epiphany and reached the limit to what he believed he could accomplish by killing, feeling that he could kill anything except hunger and thirst. After this he gave up his violent ways, took on the alias Zurkie and built an establishment in the debris of Scarstu where he believed he could slay these feelings on a daily basis.
The Emperor through the years has crushed all heroes and villains alike that have attempted to oppose his Empire's rule. Many years ago, he at some point came into dispute with his dimension's counterpart to Chairman Drek of the Blarg; of the same name and role. Although the circumstances of this conflict are unknown, it led to a war between the Empire and the Blarg. The Empire eventually emerged victorious and the clash ended with the Emperor personally turning Drek's counterpart into a sheep with a Sheepinator. He was then left as a docile, harmless sheep and now spends his time as a regular customer at Zurkie's Gastropub, chewing grass and staring straight ahead seemingly into the void.
In Ratchet's dimension, it was stated by the IRIS Supercomputer, that the robot space pirates were created by Percival Tachyon in his youth to gather resources to build his empire, later they were abandoned when they completed their purpose and left to wander the galaxy, continuing to plunder and gather valuables by their own volition. It is not known if the origin of the space pirates in Rivet's dimension is similar, but if so it could be deduced that a dimensional counterpart to Tachyon took this same course of action. What would have became of him is uncertain, but it would be likely that he would have been neutralized by the Nefarious Empire. The Space Pirates however continued to be a thorn in the Empire's side for many years, plundering the Emperor's ships and looting his bases.
Ten years prior to the events of Rift Apart, the empire conquered Corson V and constructed Nefarious City. The emperor chose to make this planet the site of his throne and from where he rules the universe. In response, a Resistance force against the Empire was formed on the planet with more recruits joining from across the universe. Rivet herself joined this resistance and quickly proved to be quite a formidible force amongst their ranks.
To combat the Resistance and properly secure the Emperor's galaxy against it, the Empire created a new and exceptional weapon named KT-7461. The powerful warbot patrolled and protected the imperial zone of Nefarious Tower from intruders. The Emperor himself praised her as being his greatest weapon. One night however after a clash with an intruder, the warbot suddenly abandoned her post and fled the planet. What had happened to her was left unknown to the Emperor and the Empire.
A key member of the Resistance named Quantum, eventually left the organization and joined the Space Pirates disguised as a robot. At some point after Quantum had first joined the pirates, he managed to place a surveillance bug on the Emperor's Assistant, enabling him to listen in on the Emperor's personal plans and always remain one step ahead of the Empire's efforts to destroy them. With this bug, Quantum is able to use his helmet to see and hear everything the assistant does. This invaluable tactical advantage allowed Quantum to quickly work his way up the ranks and eventually become captain himself, earning him the pirates' adoration and allowing them to flourish for many years.
Prior to the rise of Emperor Nefarious, the galaxy's most feared prison; Zordoom, was filled with murderers, despots, and monsters. After the Emperor rose to power, the prison fell under the control of him and his Empire. For years, it is where the Emperor has sent suspected resistance members, actual resistance members, and anyone who has committed extremely minor offenses against the Empire. Rivet was captured and incarcerated here at some point where she became very familiar with the prison's layout. She eventually escaped however with the help of a fellow inmate named Angela.
Some time years ago, at the Empire's sub-aquatic Kedaro Station on planet Cordelion, the Emperor noticed a strange creature swimming through the oceans and had it captured. Using the creature's extreme amounts of bioelectricity, he had it forcibly used as a living battery for the facility's powerful Rubion Forge to create many of his army's troopers, battle mechs and armors. Most of the Blizon mined from Blizar Prime is shipped directly to the station for use in the development of it's various dark projects.
Not long before the events of Rift Apart began, the Emperor designed a giant combat mech for himself based on his own appearance and ordered it's construction to the Science Bots at the station's Rubion Forge. He named it the Imperial Power Suit and intended to use it for special occasions against his greatest enemies.
Rift Apart[]
Shortly before the events of Rift Apart began, the Emperor devised a plan to vacate his throne and personally partake in a series of missions to get rid of all the remaining opposition to his absolute rule in unison, those being the Resistance and the space pirates. Plans for this operation were stored in an Infobot, being escorted by Troopers and the Emperor's personal Assistant. The Resistance had been made aware that this Infobot held sensitive information pertaining to the Emperor but were not sure what it was. Contained on it is a hitlist of all key members of the Resistance and Space Pirates, which when neutralized would cripple the factions. The targets being Phantom, MoyDoy, Captain Quantum, Clatchky and Rivet herself. Rivet succeeded in stealing it and escaped the Emperor's forces back to her base on Sargasso.
Not too long after the Emperor left, his counterpart Dr. Nefarious arrived in this dimension using the stolen Dimensionator and forcibly transported his archenemies Ratchet and Clank here with him to make them experience a universe where Nefarious reigns supreme. The critically damaged device then exploded, kickstarting a Dimensional Cataclysm. In the confusion, Dr. Nefarious awoke in Nefarious Tower where he was mistaken for being the Emperor himself by his followers. The Doctor then seized control of the Empire and issued a list of new self-indulgent decrees to his subjects.
To start, he began what he calls Operation: Dream Job, in which he tells everyone to role play as if he just became Emperor for the first time. He proclaims he wants an unlimited R&D, weapons, and science budget for his personal use, parties every day, and everyone to buy his upcoming memoir. He also brushes off concerns anyone has about the dimensional rifts suddenly appearing throughout the universe and tells them to simply ignore them. To try and secure his new position of power, Nefarious reaffirms himself as the emperor multiple times and orders his subjects to destroy anyone who claims to also be the emperor. Next, he proclaims that he is having all of the statues of the Emperor redone to resemble himself more closely, citing the reason that they don't quite capture his nefariousness. Finally he tells his subjects that starting tomorrow, he wants every single one of them to give him an even hundred reasons why he is the greatest emperor who has ever ruled.
To locate the missing Infobot, Seekerpedes were sent to various planets to search for it's signal. One such Seekerpede was sent to Sargasso and tracked the Infobot's signal once it was decrypted by Rivet. It then broke into Rivet's secret hideout, compromising it's location to the Empire. The Seekerpede accidentially abducted Clank however instead and Rivet chased after it where she engaged it in battle. The craft's pilot was eventually destroyed and Clank was rescued. Rivet then checked the decrypted infobot where she learned of the Emperor's hitlist targets and relayed the information to the Resistance's network.
At Zurkie's, the Emperor's Assistant spies on Ratchet, Clank and Rivet's plans to build a new Dimensionator. She relays this information to Dr. Nefarious, who soon makes a public broadcast in which he offers a bounty of three squillion Nefarious freedom coupons for the dead or alive capture of Ratchet and Rivet. He sends Nefarious Trooper strike teams to intercept their arrivals on Savali and Blizar Prime. The troopers take the Savali Monks hostage on Savali and attempt to plunder the Interdimensional Archives but are thwarted by Ratchet and Kit who obtain the Dimensionator blueprints. Elsewhere in the ruins of Blizar Prime, another team of troopers hunt for Rivet and Clank but are also unsuccessful in stopping them from recovering Phase Quartz to power the Dimensionator.
Later after the troopers had failed to stop Ratchet and Rivet, Dr. Nefarious makes another broadcast where he attempts to dispel panic that the dimension is in danger and discards them as lies. He also greatly increases the bounty he had previously placed on the Lombaxes to 27 squijillion Nefaribucks, although it seems his bounty is in fact a ruse and he has no intention of providing any reward.
In order for Ratchet and Kit to build the Dimensionator, they travel to Cordelion to use Kedaro Station's Rubion Forge to create the device. The station is one of the most secure outposts in the galaxy with the only Rubion Forge powerful enough to construct a device as complicated as the Dimensionator. The duo accidentally alert the patrols on the surface and the facility goes into lockdown. Using Blizon crystals to shift to another dimension where the station is long abandoned, the two find their way into the facility and shift back to Rivet's dimension. They reach the forge but mistakenly activate it with auxillary power only and destroy it, putting the station into high alert. Eventually the creature powering the forge named Juice was freed from it's prison and escaped with Ratchet to the other dimension using the Blizon. Juice and his counterpart powered up the decrepit forge here and the Dimensionator is finally recreated.
Ratchet, Kit, Rivet and Clank then met up at Zurkie's together to finally complete the device and repair the damage to the dimensions. Dr. Nefarious however had anticipated their return and had his Nefarious Troopers apprehend Zurkie; the establishment's owner and prepared an ambush inside the Gastropub for them. A squadron of troopers train their weapons on the four and force them to surrender. The Emperor's Assistant takes the Dimensionator and Phase Quartz off of the two Lombaxes and presents them to Dr. Nefarious who steps out into the open. The Doctor gloats how good this dimension is to him as he loads the Phase Quartz into the Dimensionator. The Lombaxes silently coordinate an escape and Ratchet surprise attacks the troopers behind them with his wrench while Rivet runs ahead and tackles Dr. Nefarious through a window into the Battleplex.
Rivet and Kit then fight Dr. Nefarious in the arena where he begins displaying great overconfidence in his new position of power, declaring himself as the one true emperor that cannot be defeated and is beloved by all his subjects. Soon, the Doctor begins using the new Dimensionator and sends them through a rift to the intact dimension's Blizar Prime. Nefarious soon begins losing his patience and attempts to simply make Rivet fall into the lava pits below so he can continue enjoying his new reign as emperor. They fight on the roof of the Chief Engineer's Survey Station until he sends them through another rift to Sargasso, where he sets a wild Grunthor on them. After beating the creature, they continue the battle again until Nefarious attempts to send them through another rift into the heart of a supernova. He mistakenly brings them back to the Battleplex again however, as he frustratedly demands to know why the buttons on the Dimensionator are not labeled. Eventually Rivet and Kit are able to defeat him and he drops the Dimensionator.
The quickly spread news that the rebel Lombax was fighting the emperor himself, caught Emperor Nefarious' attention and he immediately went to Zurkie's to see for himself. The Emperor had been watching the battle and entered the area to seize the Dimensionator for himself once the Doctor was defeated. He boasts that he is almost finished neutralizing all his enemies, with the exceptions of Captain Quantum and Rivet. To spite Rivet, he shoots a rift and sucks in the audience who were cheering for the emperor's defeat. After incapacitating Ratchet and Rivet with his telekinesis-like abilities, he confronts his injured counterpart and aims the Dimensionator at him. The Doctor pleads for an alliance between the two and the Emperor accepts. With the Empire's earlier discovered knowledge of Rivet's base, the Emperor proposes a home game to Rivet before he and the Doctor disappear into a rift. Rivet knows this to mean he is going to Sargasso and sets off after him with Kit while Ratchet and Clank head to Ardolis to save Captain Quantum before the Emperor reaches him.
After Dr. Nefarious had been exposed, the Emperor took full control of the Empire again and launched an invasion of Sargasso. Dr. Nefarious began working in a co-commander role but the Emperor's immense ego created much tension with their alliance. The Emperor attacked with a large Nefarious Starship as the invasion force's mothership, swarms of attack dropships, hundreds of troopers and a fleet of Battle Cruisers. Using the power of the Dimensionator in conjunction with his ship's technology, the Emperor is able to open multiple rifts for his troopers ready for deployment to enter and instantly appear on the planet's surface below.
The troopers were ordered to begin exterminating all life on the planet in a ploy in draw Rivet in. The Morts were able to repair the damaged Seekerpede Rivet fought earlier and used it in defense of the planet once it was freed from a dimensional anomaly by Kit. The Emperor eventually orders his battle cruisers to activate their Destruct-o Beams to destroy the planet. Rivet however uses the help of her Pterafoid Flyer friend Trudi and Gelatonium bombs created by the Morts to destroy the cruisers in time, just before their beams can breach the planet's core and obliterate it. Although Rivet and Kit's efforts manage to save the planet from the Emperor's advances, he unceremoniously banishes them to a pocket dimension before leaving, unaware that Rivet had the means to escape.
Back in Nefarious City, the Emperor announces his return and addresses his subjects to call out Dr. Nefarious as a “Bumbling Quack with notions of grandeur” who tried to replace him. He declares he will deal with his citizens soon, having deduced that they were so devoted to him to the point of not noticing the difference. He also publicizes that he is working on a new music track that he will be releasing soon. After hearing about what had happened earlier at the Kedaro Station when Ratchet and Kit infiltrated it to build a new Dimensionator and accidentally destroyed the Rubion Forge, the Emperor contacted the facility. Over a hologram, he addresses the station's staff and remarks with concealed anger and disbelief that this would happen after he vacated his throne for such a short time. He then laughs dryly before flatly uttering that they are all going to die.
Later, after Ratchet and Clank had successfully tracked down Quantum on planet Ardolis and saved him, the Emperor had also finally found the captain and opened a huge rift beneath his ship to send the three of them to his prison. Although unbeknownst to him, Quantum had tossed Ratchet and Clank to safety and sacrificed himself so the two could escape with the helmet device he uses to spy on the Emperor.
With the apparent defeat of both Ratchet and Rivet, alongside the confirmed capture of Phantom, Captain Quantum, and the robot pirates, the Emperor begins to celebrate his universal conquest and his empire's complete control over the galaxy. He however feels stricken with a feeling of emptiness. Dr. Nefarious infers that the Emperor had mistakenly equated happiness with success and with nothing else to achieve now, his life has no purpose anymore. The Emperor angrily retorted such notions and instead believes that he merely needs to expand his Empire and enslave every dimension in order to feel happy. First however, he needs the coordinates to travel to every dimension and so, the two of them set off to Savali in search of the Lombax Dimensional Map within the Interdimensional Archives. Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Kit listened into his plans using Quantum's helmet and the four headed to Savali after him.
The Emperor soon arrived at Savali on his Flagship, along with an army of troopers and dropships where his forces attacked the Archives and heavily damaged it. Gary and the Savali Monks however had hidden the Dimensional Map within an anomaly in order to keep it out of the Emperor's hands. Gary was then apprehended by the Emperor's forces and imprisoned on the Flagship. The Emperor's overuse of the Dimensionator begins to have negative affects, weakening the walls between the dimensions further. As a result, aggressive, skeletal creatures from a nightmare dimension begin breaking into Rivet's universe through rifts, attacking both Ratchet and the Emperor's own forces, hampering their progress in finding the map.
Rivet and Kit infiltrated the Emperor's Flagship and rescued Gary from his captivity and escaped. Gary then instructed Ratchet and Clank to head to the planet's Catacombs to retrieve the map before the Emperor finds it. Whilst Clank was inside the anomaly however, the Emperor caught up with them, demanding the map as soon as Clank had reclaimed it in exchange for sparing Ratchet's life. After receiving it, the two of them were promptly banished to Zordoom Prison via a rift. Rivet and Kit show up too late and Kit attempts stop the Emperor herself in her warbot form but his life is suddenly saved by Dr. Nefarious with the Dimensionator, who sends her to Zordoom aswell. The Nefariouses then escape through another rift leaving Rivet alone and distraught at the revelation that Kit was the same warbot who caused her to lose her arm years ago.
Rivet then traveled to Viceron with the goal of rescuing her captured friends from Zordoom Prison. The Emperor had recently offered his Assistant the job of warden at Zordoom, where she begins getting drunk on her new position of power. Her solution to the prison's serious overcrowding issue is to "reform" them with a gauntlet of crushing pistons. With Rivet's past knowledge of the prison's layout, she carefully lands her ship on the outskirts and makes her way to the Prisoner Processing Centre where she frees several resistance members including Quantum and Phantom. She saves Clank from being incinerated and pursues Ratchet and Kit's priority prisoner cell as it is transported throughout the prison.
After breaking into the warden's office and releasing every prisoner in Zordoom, Rivet teams up with the Goons-4-Less and Space Pirates to fight their Nefarious Trooper captors. Ratchet and Kit's VIP cell is transported to the prison's Emergency Evacuation Platforms where a Nefarious Starship is dispatched from a rift to evacuate the two off of the planet. Rivet fights her way through waves of the Assistant's Nefarious Troopers and destroys the Royal Guard Escorts. After the billions of bolts in damages caused under her watch and numerous prisoner escapes, the Assistant is fired from her job by an unheard voice, to which she angrily replies that they can't fire her and she instead quits. Rivet rescues Ratchet and Kit in time and prevents them being airlifted to the Starship. Rivet and Kit however have an argument and dissolve their partnership with Kit refusing to continue. Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Phantom then leave in Rivet's ship and return to Zurkie's to meet up with the other prison escapees.
Back at Zurkie's, Rivet and her allies begin forming a plan to launch a final assault on the Emperor to stop him and save the dimensions. During this however, the Emperor suddenly makes another public broadcast to the universe. He announces his intention to conquer every dimension in existence and reveals he has a large war fleet assembled in orbit of Corson V ready for invasion. Once he declares Dr. Nefarious' home dimension to be his first target however, the Doctor is shocked and angered upon hearing this as he feels it is rightfully his to rule. The Emperor however suddenly pushes the Doctor to the ground and grabs the Dimensionator off of him before declaring his first destination to be Megalopolis, which he intends to redub New Nefarious City. He creates an enormous rift in front of Corson V leading straight to it's counterpart in Ratchet and Clank's dimension and laughs as his armies advance into it. Ratchet, Rivet and their allies then set off and follow the Emperor's forces through the rift to fight back his invasion.
Ratchet and Clank fly into the city and the two find Corson V resembling it's counterpart in Rivet's dimension with Nefarious Tower standing at the heart of the city and the Emperor's insignia brandished on many of the buildings. The walls between the dimensions have continued to deteriorate, causing structures from other realities to materalize in Megalopolis. Nefarious Troopers and dropships proceeded to attack the city indiscriminately while the Emperor's Flagship loomed in the skies. Ratchet teamed up with the goons and pirates at the Midtown Mall and fought back the attacking troopers before confronting the Nefariouses. Dr. Nefarious was quickly losing patience with the Emperor's contemptuous behaviour towards him. Upon discovering Ratchet and Clank are the heroes of this dimension, the Emperor decided this called for a special sort of annihilation before he and the Doctor dissappeared into a rift together with the Dimensionator.
The Emperor soon emerged from a huge rift co-piloting his new Imperial Power Suit with Dr. Nefarious. A massive battle with the Power Suit and the Emperor's forces against Ratchet, Rivet, the goons and space pirates then took place in the centre of Megalopolis. The Emperor's confidant façade slowly begins to crumble however as the heroes begin gaining the upper hand with the Emperor becoming enraged while Dr. Nefarious relishes at his struggling. He shouts in bewilderment as to why they will not simply submit to him. Dr. Nefarious illustrates that this great tenacity from his enemies is the true reason his dimension is so hard to take over and not the notion that the Doctor was incompetent as the Emperor had believed.
After Ratchet destroys the Suit's bio-mechanical heart, the mech collapses onto the Midtown Atrium. Dr. Nefarious pulls himself out of the Suit's wreckage brandishing the Dimensionator but the Emperor surprise attacks him and takes the device back for himself again. The Emperor then turns to Rivet and furiously vows to bring in every last one of his followers to make her bow to him. He fires the Dimensionator wildly into the sky and thousands of Nefarious Troopers pour out of multiple rifts, surrounding Rivet and training their weapons on her. Suddenly however, a rain of missiles strike the troopers and Kit arrives, saving Rivet's life. The two agree to team up with Kit holding back the army of troopers while Rivet fights the Emperor himself.
Whilst battling Rivet, the Emperor begins hysterically pronouncing that he is loved by everyone and is the destined ruler of every dimension. Rivet attempts to reason with him and cries out that he has gone too far with him tearing reality apart and needs to stop or all of existence will be destroyed. The Emperor however mocks her pleads and sarcastically demeans the dimensons as being thankless and uninspiring. After sustaining damage, the Emperor attempts to hide behind the wreckage of the Power Suit and orders his troopers to attack Rivet to protect him. Rivet in turn ridicules his cowardice and that everyone can see him now for what he really is. Kit helps Rivet with the attacking troopers and Nefarious remarks that she would come back after so long just to betray her Emperor. Kit however fully denounces her previous life to him and that he is not her Emperor. On the cusp of being defeated, the Emperor again orders all his remaining troopers to protect him. Rivet and Kit then fight off the last of his forces together, leaving him utterly alone now.
On the final legs of the fight, he attempts once again to call in his troopers, only for nobody to appear. Seeing his defeat as an inevitability, the Emperor suddenly however starts to lose his mind and absolutely refuses to accept it. He goes mad and begins overclocking the Dimensionator to collapse every dimension in existence into nothingness. Rivet jumps into Kit's hand and the bot hurls her through the air towards Nefarious, where she strikes the Emperor with a powerful blow to the face with her hammer.
The heroes reclaim the Dimensionator and use it to summon a kraken who attempts to drag the Emperor inside a rift. Clinging to his mech, he begs his counterpart to help him. Despite Dr. Nefarious' attempts to form a legitimate partnership with the Emperor, he however had felt nothing but loathing for his self-obsessed counterpart in the time he came to know him and easily sees through him. Using the same words the Emperor had used against him previously; the Doctor coldly asks "What do you know about winning?" and then kicks his hand off the edge. The Kraken drags the Emperor into the portal and it closes, leaving him to his presumed doom and bringing his long reign to an end.
In the ending credits, Ratchet, Clank, Rivet and Kit are present in Nefarious City as a giant statue of the Emperor is being pulled down to mark the liberation of the planet. Dr. Nefarious is next seen silently bidding an end to his brief stint as emperor in Rivet's dimension and leaves Emperor Nefarious' office to go visit his assistant Lawrence and his family where he dotes on their newborn, robot child. Next, the Emperor's Assistant is seen attempting to slip into the Emperor's now empty throne to usurp some of his power that she had longed for, but she is soon chased out by Ms. Zurkon and Phantom.
Later in the credits; in Nefarious Tower, Rivet and Kit go through the Emperor's record collection, comprised entirely of music created and sung by himself for the sole purpose of feeding his own self-absorbed ego. Rivet laughs and shows Kit the recent record cover for "Join Me at the Top". Sometime before the Emperor's invasion of Megalopolis, he forced Dr. Nefarious to sing this duet with him and had it released to the public. In the song, the Emperor sings about how he is lonely as the single most overwhelmingly successful being in the universe and that he is everything the Doctor is not. His offers of asking others to join him at the top are quite insincere however and he is happy occupying this position exclusively for himself.
Society[]
The Emperor himself appears to not have an absolute contempt for organic life like his counterpart and is content with subjugating both robots and organics alike, allowing them both only to exist purely at the service of his empire. However robots do appear to still be considered in a higher social class over organics, with his robotic followers referring to them as "squishies" and gleefully boasting their total robot domination. When Rivet was spotted on Corson V abducting and escaping with Clank by Nefarious troopers, they pursued and ordered her to "release the hostage" showing that they had identified Clank as a robotic citizen and attempted to save him from an organic threat. This reaffirms that robots are indeed considered a higher class than organics and a priority between the two in the Empire's society. While Ratchet and Kit attempted to use the Emperor's Rubion Forge at Kedaro Station to create a new Dimensionator, they were confronted by a ultility robot known as Junk Bot. Here, Junk Bot referred to Ratchet as Kit's "steed", refusing to speak to him and only conversed with Kit. This seems to imply that organics are treated on the same level as a pet or animal to robotic citizens of the Empire.
Nefarious City in particular caters almost exclusively to robots, with organics having almost no place in its society or even much of a means to coexist. The entire City is monitored by a constant surveillance state, ensuring citizens can't act without the Emperor's forces knowing and also contains frequent security checkpoints. There is much of a lack of vegetation, with only holograms of trees left as commemoration and the only places small pockets of plantlife can be found is in the severely neglected slum areas. Despite robots having a societal priority, they are still however given very few rights and exploited heavily by the Emperor's economy and brutally corrupt work ethics. Many consumable products are adorned with the image of the Emperor on them, such as drink cans.
The Emperor is known for throwing social events and creating culture for his citizens, this however is done specifically to feed his own self-absorbed ego, with parties celebrating his own greatness, artisan crafts made in his own image and original music created and sung by himself. He has a great desire to be loved by his citizens and doesn't care what methods are carried out to ensure that happens. Anyone that steps out of line or expresses dislike of the Emperor's art or music is either destroyed or imprisoned, wherein they undergo rehabilitation, which leads to either extensive brainwashing to love him or death.
A product that is in particularly forced upon the population are Emperor Nefarious Commemorative tribute Statuettes, which are made in huge quantities and shipped in the millions regularly. Citizens are expected to have at least one in every room of their homes, with a new weather resistant model now for balconies and patios.
Economy[]
The economy of the Empire used the Emperors own brand of currency, that being Nefarious Dollars, known more commonly as Nefari bucks or Nef bucks. They appear to be red paper/polymer like banknotes with the insignia of Emperor Nefarious printed on them and emitting a light, luminescent glow. The currency is used throughout Nefarious City and even as far out at establishments such as Zurkie's Gastropub and Battleplex, where several 100 marked notes can be seen at the bar, jammed into a decapitated robots head, being used as a tip jar. It's assumed they are used throughout the rest of the universe as well and everywhere the Empire has conquered, which would include all developed planets that use legal tender.
Due to the oppressive nature of the Empire, citizens work long hours for little pay and are subtly threatened to purchase as many things as they can when shopping, purchasing data on all customers is also collected to identify those who are avoiding spending more with 100% of all proceeds going directly to the Emperor. The Empire also used what are known as Nefarious Freedom Coupons, which are assumedly used for discounts on goods and services. One of the very few positives from the Empire's influence is slightly cheaper consumer electronics. Another positive influence of the Empire is their crack down on poaching, which saved the Grunthor from extinction. This was very likely inadvertently caused, as the Emperor may have disliked the fact that poachers were making large sums of profits from illegal venues outside his Empire for personal gain and not contributing to his own economy.
Bolts however still appear to be used and have monetary value, as seen with Ms Zurkon's vendor, which uses them as payment for weapons and ammo. Ms Zurkon claims she works so hard to earn payment with her business to put her son Zurkon Jr. through Bogon University, so he can study existential economics. Her being an ally of the Resistance against the Empire may suggest she has personal reasons to not use the Emperor's currency. The degree to which Nefarious Dollars and Bolts are used in conjunction is not known but Nef bucks appear to be much more prominent, at least amongst the public. The damages caused by Rivet's jail break at Zordoom Prison is said to be in the range of numerous billions of bolts.
Military[]
The strength of the Empire's military might has remained unmatched in the universe for many years. The Emperor has been in many conflicts in his life and was never defeated in any of them, with his armies destroying all competition, his Empire and military forces were able to flourish and encompass all civilizations in the known universe. Undeveloped primitive worlds like Sargasso, primarily populated with non-sapient creatures are of no interest to the Emperor, as he deems them to be repulsive and to have nothing worth conquering.
The Empire's primary military forces are the Nefarious Troopers, robotic soldiers of a variety of shapes and sizes, created to enforce Emperor Nefarious' will on the universe and destroy any who oppose it. The Troopers are created in manufacturing facilities across the universe, with a very prominent one being the powerful Rubion Forge at Kedaro Station on planet Cordelion, the birthplace of many of the Army's battle mechs and armors. The Emperor commands a fleet of several, enormous Nefarious Starships, among them being his main flagship that he operates from. Each one housing thousands of Troopers ready to be deployed for planetary invasions.
Amongst the ranks of warships are the much smaller Nefarious Battle Cruisers, however these are equipped with devastating Destruct-o Beams, capable of blasting straight through a planet's crust, destabilizing the core and destroying it entirely in mere minutes. The Cruisers also each have protective shields that are impervious to conventional weaponry, the Morts however were able to create bombs out of their Gelatonium stashes that can destabilize them and cause them to deactivate. For aerial battles, the fleet can also deploy several airborne explosive mines for their enemies. It is noted by Dr. Nefarious that the Empire is in the possession of at least five planet destroying cannons.
Zurkie, an elite synthoid weapon (prior to his turn to pacifism) was responsible for wiping out and causing the mass extinction of the population of Scarstu, a planet then destroyed by Emperor Nefarious, from where Zurkie's was then built in it's debris field. It's implied by this sequence of events that Zurkie was working for the Empire to commit this act of genocide and was employed by it's military before he retired from his violent ways and opened his Gastropub.
Other more exceptional creations by the Empire's military industrial complex include the Imperial Power Suit, a giant mobile mech standing at over 100 stories tall, armed with an array of deadly weaponry, designed and piloted by Emperor Nefarious for only the most special of occasions. The Suit was built with extremely durable metals crafted in the Rubion Forge and created in the very image of the Emperor himself.
Another special weapon developed by the Empire was the warbot KT-7461 or who would later go on to be known as Kit. She was a very powerful soldier, created to keep the Emperor's Galaxy secure and protect Nefarious Tower on Corson V from intruders. Designed to be extremely efficient in battle, being of a rather large size in bulk and physically powerful. Equipped with wrist mounted missile launchers, destructive lasers fired from the eyes and fast flight capabilities via a jetpack. She was hailed by Emperor Nefarious as being his greatest weapon, a mark of praise she took great pride in. Unlike the other robots made to serve the Empire however, KT-7461 was naive and had a sense of empathy. When she attempted to stop a rebel in the Imperial zone and ended up blowing off their arm, she discovered the extent to what being a weapon to the Empire truly meant and fled her role in great shame, exiling herself to the remote planet Savali to keep others safe from her own destructive capabilities. She dedicated her efforts to preserving knowledge with the monks who live there and chose to use a more diminutive mode compared to her hulking warbot form.
Alternate Counterpart[]
In an unknown alternate dimension; designated only as dimension ???, an alternate counterpart to the Nefarious Empire is revealed to exist with presumably an alternate Emperor Nefarious aswell ruling it. In this dimension, the Kedaro Station on planet Cordelion has long since been abandoned. Years ago here, a utility robot named Junk Bot formed a friendship with a strange creature from Cordelion's oceans. Upon revealing the existence of the creature to the other workers at the station however, he was dismayed when they forcibly captured it and used it's extreme amounts of bio-electricity to make it a living battery for the Rubion Forge. Later in his distress, Junk Bot broke the creature out of it's containment and it proceeded to decimate the facility. During these years Junk Bot named the creature Juice and stayed with it on the abandoned station, where the utility bot's mental health deteriorated in his extended isolation.
This alternate dimension appears to be an offshoot of Rivet's with certain events playing out under slightly different circumstances. In Rivet's dimension a counterpart to the creature was first discovered by Emperor Nefarious instead, who also had it captured and used as a power source for his Rubion Forge. Here Junk Bot had no such relationship with the creature, meaning it never escaped it's confinement and remained a battery. At the site of Juice's escape in the abandoned station's power room; the old, wrecked remains of Nefarious Sluggers and Lasertroopers can be seen strewn around the chamber, indicating Juice had attacked and destroyed them.
