My Blaster Runs Hot is a fictional holo-film and holo-game in A Crack in Time. Starring Captain Qwark as himself, Romulus Slag as the antagonist Gabriel Von Cabindish, and Rusty Pete as Qwark's ally, attorney Slate McSteel, the movie is heavily advertised throughout the Breegus System of the Polaris Galaxy, on billboards and space radio. The arcade game is seen in the Agorian Battleplex.

The player can play the arcade game on one of the consoles in the Agorian Battleplex lobby. The game is a 1-2 player 2D minigame.

History[]

My Blaster Runs Hot was produced by Vox Holo-films.[1] It was one of at least two holo-films Qwark starred in around that time, alongside Unicop.[2]

The holo-movie starred Captain Slag as Gabriel Von Cavendish, a criminal who steals babies and is "evil fer no apparent reason", Rusty Pete as district attorney Slate McSteel, and Captain Qwark as himself. It was rated PG-13.[3] During the filming of the holo-movie, Captain Qwark had an outburst toward his lighting director, Doug, about the difficulties of acting, reading from a script, and threatening to shoot him with his prop gun. The outburst was recorded.[1]

Qwark then had a promotional run for the movie. He was interviewed about My Blaster Runs Hot, but was irritated when the interviewer instead asked about Ratchet and Clank.[4] A trailer aired on space radio.[3] However, the movie's PR suffered after the holo-recording of Qwark's outburst toward Doug was stolen from the set and leaked, prompting many fans to boycott its release. A spokesman for Vox Holo-films claimed Doug and Qwark had since become best friends and went fishing once a week in Pokitaru, but this was heavily doubted by presenter Kip Darling.[1]

Terachnoids in the Battleplex reacted positively to the My Blaster Runs Hot holo-game playable in the lobby.[5] When Qwark was entered in the Agorian Battleplex, however, the agorian announcer obliged Qwark's request to plug the movie during the fight but mocked his poor performance in the fight itself.[6]

My Blaster Runs Hot: The Game is a top-down shooter featuring Captain Qwark based on his film of the same name. It is accessible at one of the arcades in the Battleplex lobby and can be played either alone or with a friend in local co-op. The first player always controls Captain Qwark, and the second Rusty McPete as Slate McSteel. Both have identical gameplay, other than different sprites and their own scores. In 2-player, one player can revive the other by shooting them with the blaster, making it much easier to progress and achieve a high score.

My Blaster Runs Hot gameplay 1

Gameplay of My Blaster Runs Hot.

The game's objective is to achieve a high score and survive as long as possible against hostile robots that appear in waves from one of four entrances. Points are awarded for destroying robots and rescuing the green cyclopean civilians, which appear either as adults, teenagers, or babies. Robots will appear in increasingly large numbers and more dangerous types as the game progresses. Destroying robots is done with your blaster, which has its own heat bar that increases each time the weapon is fired while slowly decreasing over time.

At a high heat level, the blaster will deal more damage, fire a much larger bullet, and knock enemies back further. Once overheated, the blaster can fire a single piercing laser blast, after which it needs to cool down entirely. The blaster can also be used to hit enemies with melee, although this does require the use of the fire button, it still works when overheated.

The robots come in four different common types: a spider-like bot, a bipedal bot with blaster, an explosive bot, and a tank-like vehicle. The spider-like bot, worth only ten points, is only dangerous to civilians but appears in large numbers. The bipedal robot, worth thirty points, will shoot at you. The explosive robot, which looks similar to the spider bot, is worth forty points and will detonate in a large explosion if destroyed. It will also start to flash red if you get too close, indicating it is about to explode. The tank, worth fifty points, is the most durable by far and also shoots faster than the bipedal robot.

Destroying enemies fast enough also grants a temporary multiplier, increasing with each successive kill. The multiplier will disappear if your shots miss entirely, however, and the time that it lasts is incredibly brief. Due to this, you are likely to only trigger it when attacking large swarms of the weakest enemy, firing a laser, or when detonating an explosive enemy amidst a group.

The civilians are all worth 100 points and have a small chance to drop power-ups that grant either a permanently maximized heat bar for a second, invincibility, or free lives. Civilians cannot be harmed by your attacks but will perish if hit too many times by the robots. Robots do not actively shoot at them but will chase them if they're close enough.

My Blaster Runs Hot gameplay 2

The boss of My Blaster Runs Hot.

At the start of wave 15, the boss will appear: a large square that takes up almost a quarter of the arena, with a large four-barreled turret on top. The turret will spin around, firing bullets as it does with a somewhat random fire rate to avoid making it too easy for you. After taking some damage, it will move around, although always leaving just enough space for the player character to move between it and the edge of the arena.

Upon defeating the boss, a large number of baby civilians will spawn, which subsequently also guarantees recovery of any lives lost so far. The robots from wave 16 onwards will have a purple hue to them and be tougher than before. It is unclear as to when the game actually ends, and whether or not there is a maximum number of waves if any new bosses appear, and if the enemies get tougher even more.

Completing a game with at least 10,000 points will reward you with a bronze trophy named "My Blaster Runs Really, Really Hot".

The "Master Blaster" skill point is acquired by keeping Qwark's blaster at a hot state for over 60 seconds without it overheating.
