The Megacorp Security Robot I - Chainsaw Model,[1] also known as the MSR type 1,[1] is an enemy in Going Commando. It is a Megacorp robot used for security, often deployed alongside the Megacorp Security Robot II - Flamethrower Model and the PX6 BladeBall. It is used by various people throughout the game, including Angela Cross for protection, the Thugs-4-Less, and in gladiatorial combat of both Galactic Gladiators and the Megacorp Games.
Three versions of the chainsaw MSR were seen throughout Going Commando, with the two superior versions being named v2.0 and v3.0 respectively.
Upgraded spider-bots later appeared in Secret Agent Clank.
History[]
The Megacorp Security Robot I - Chainsaw Model v1.0 was first encountered in the flying lab on Aranos, during "Infiltrate the flying base" and "Escape the thief's security robots". Angela Cross, at the time known as the Unknown Thief, deployed the MSR type I for security purposes and to prevent an intruder from reaching the Protopet. After Ratchet almost did, Angela expressed disappointment, claiming the v1.0 was an outdated model.[2] This version of the MSR was later seen in the Galactic Gladiators in the Maktar Resort, as well as during the "Destroy the signal transponders" mission on the Thugs-4-Less jamming array.
The MSR type 1 v2.0 was the best version on the market at the time of release, and was much more durable due to an alloy combining carbonox and raritanium.[1] This model was used to protect the frozen base on Siberius, and encountered by Ratchet and Clank during "Find and confront the thief", in which Angela used them for her protection while trying to destroy the Protopet. These were also deployed using dropships.
The MSR type 1 v3.0 was retooled and reprogrammed, made more durable, and came with a duraplated sharpened chainsaw.[1] It was only fought during the Megacorp Games on Joba.
Characteristics[]
The MSR is a medium sized, blue robot with four spider-like legs, designed to allow it to more efficiently chase down intruders.[1] It has an otherwise humanoid form, with a left hand with four pincers and a red light in its palm. Its right forearm is a standard-issue arm-mounted chainsaw.[1] Its face consists of a single red eye, and it has a blue light both in its chest and connecting its four limbs. It is capable of leaping forward and swiping with its chainsaw to attack.
The MSR v2.0 and v3.0 are largely similar in appearance, but slightly bulkier. The second version improved its toughness using armor plated with an alloy combining carbonox and Raritanium,[1] while the third made it further resistant and improved its damage with a duraplated sharpened chainsaw.[1]
The MSR can be found in two idle positions: either dangling from a ceiling using rope connected to its clawed right appendage, or deactivated on the ground with its arms and legs tucked in, the lights on its eyes off. When an intruder arrives, it will either descend with the rope, or power up and move towards the target. When the target is out of sight, it will spin its left hand in the air before switching to instead spin its chainsaw while standing idly. Upon seeing them, it will jump briefly in surprise before moving in on them. After landing a successful hit, it will raise its chainsaw in the air a few times triumphantly.
Combat[]
The v1.0 MSR chainsaw model is a weak enemy, as it is fairly slow to reach Ratchet and will only be able to attack in melee range. It only ever poses a threat if a group is allowed to reach Ratchet. It is easily dispatched with a few Lancer bullets to destroy it before it even comes close, and failing this, a Gravity Bomb can destroy a group instantly. The Chopper and Blitz Gun are also good weapon choices during the Galactic Gladiators challenges.
Later, the v2.0 and v3.0 MSR chainsaw models are much deadlier foes. While they still only fight in melee range, they can sustain much more damage, and their attacks are more powerful. The strategy for dealing with them, however, is mostly the same: remain out of their range and use a ranged weapon to attack them. Weapons such as the Seeker Gun, Blitz Gun are effective against the v2.0 models, with the Synthenoids and Miniturret Glove being useful as support. The Minirocket Tube, Plasma Coil, Bouncer, and Hoverbomb Gun are effective against the v3.0 models.
Behind the scenes[]
The spinning blades on the MSRs used were the same as the blades on the Chopper.[3]
