Kip Darling is a character in A Crack in Time and All 4 One. He is a veteran anchor for Polaris News, often accompanied by his younger co-anchor, Pepper Fairbanks, and their producer, Harvey.[1][2]
Kip Darling is never seen in person and is only ever heard in voice.
History[]
Before A Crack in Time[]
Darling was married three times, each marriage fraught with issues. These experiences taught him that deception and surprise are key ingredients to any successful offensive.[3]
Kip Darling appears to be older and to have had a longer history in news compared to Pepper Fairbanks, who often jabs at him being "dried up" and "rusty."[4][2]
A Crack in Time[]
On space radio, Darling and Fairbanks reported on various major events occurring across Polaris during A Crack in Time, particularly the time phenomena crisis resulting from Dr. Nefarious' damage to the Great Clock. They covered time-related phenomena, including Polaris Defense Force installations frozen in temporal rifts,[5] Rykan V experiencing a sudden Ice Age,[6] and long-extinct Slug-Guzzling Swamp Weasels eating gelatonium stockpiles on Sargasso.[7] Darling hosted a special Polaris News segment with political guest correspondent Mr. Zurkon, who frequently advocated for violence as a solution to the time crisis.[8]
Darling and Fairbanks also covered Ratchet's various exploits throughout the Breegus System, including his sighting and rescue of the fongoids in the Phylax Sector,[4] the defeat of the VX-99 in Axiom City,[9] repelling the agorian assault on Krell Canyon,[1] and winning the Bronze Tournament at the Agorian Battleplex.[2]
In other news stories, they reported on the recovery of the starship Flint Vorselon used to escape from Zordoom Prison,[10] a Captain Qwark holo-recording scandal from the set of My Blaster Runs Hot,[11] the controversy surrounding the Lance and Janice tenth season finale,[12] the debate about Gimlick Valley's historical significance,[13] and the three-year disappearance of Angela Cross.[14]
Between segments, Darling spoke with celebrity amoeboid Glimglam Farblenash about his new comedy album,[8] and also with Ace Hardlight following his recent release from prison.[14]
After the events of A Crack in Time, Darling later reported on the disappearance of time-related phenomena following the destruction of Dr. Nefarious' space station.[15]
All 4 One[]
Kip hosted an update on the news segment, "The Search for a Supervillain," which covered the ongoing hunt for Dr. Nefarious' whereabouts after the events of A Crack in Time. By satellite, Kip interviewed Ratchet and Clank, asking if they would come out of retirement to assist in the search, which they declined. He then interviewed Galactic President Qwark, who assured viewers there was no danger. Kip also hosted a segment on the ten million possible ways loofah sponges could kill you.[16]
When Dr. Nefarious unleashed a Light-Eating Z'Grute on Luminopolis, Kip and Pepper provided live coverage of the crisis. During the Z'Grute's rampage, Kip reported on the destruction of Rusty Pete's Healthy Hamburger Shack,[17] and mentioned their sponsor, Proton Paul's Lunar Funeral Home.[18]
Characteristics[]
As seen in his holographic portrait, Kip appears to be of a sea creature-like species, with a mustache and a tentacle on his head resembling short hair with a quiffed fringe.
Darling has a strained relationship with co-host Fairbanks, often belittling and mocking her. He notably described her as "mildly talented" and called her a "vacuous, soul-devouring demon spawn who feasts on the hopes and dreams of the innocent for sustenance." Fairbanks, in turn, criticizes Darling's conceited attitude, describing him as a "rusty old has-been" and "dried up know-it-all." [4][2] In each case, Darling initiated the bickering with snarky comments at Fairbanks' expense. Darling has also shown a lack of professionalism, at one point ending a segment by declaring he would need to "rethink [his] life" after callers appeared uninterested in the topic of the news segment.[13]
