The Insomniac Museum is a recurring secret location in the Ratchet & Clank series, featured in Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, A Crack in Time, and Ratchet & Clank (2016 game). It is an easter egg location, typically modeled on Insomniac Games' developer offices, featuring various exhibits providing insight behind the scenes of the game, many of which the player can interact with. It is often populated with models of unfinished content, playable unfinished levels, and showcases of some developer tools. The Museum is typically unlocked by earning many of the games' collectibles, or accessed through a secret method.

In Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank, the player can access the High Impact Games Treehouse, a similar location but created by the High Impact Games developers.

Appearances[]

Going Commando[]

The first Insomniac Museum features in Going Commando. It is accessed either by using a teleporter in the Silver City, Boldan (found on the fountain and usable at 3:00 AM), or from the shortcuts menu after acquiring all weapons with all mods (thus requiring the player to collect all platinum bolts). This museum features developer commentary on unused material from the original Ratchet & Clank and from Going Commando, as well as the testing area used by the developers to test Ratchet's movement.

Up Your Arsenal[]

The Insomniac Museum in Up Your Arsenal is accessed either by collecting all in-game trophies, or using a teleporter in Metropolis, Kerwan, from 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM. This features developer descriptions of unused material. It also features many playable areas, including two unused Qwark vid-comic levels, the beginning of an unused turboslider race on Florana, and a fight with Chainblade with whips in the museum.

A Crack in Time[]

The Insomniac Museum in A Crack in Time is accessed by completing "Rescue all Zoni" followed by "Vanquish Lord Vorselon", or available from the start if the player had either pre-ordered the discovery package or purchased the Collector's Edition. The room is modeled after the offices, but appears similar to Clank's subconscious. This features more playable areas, including an unfinished hoverboots race against Alister Azimuth, a teleport floor puzzle, an area allowing the player to create agorian warriors to fight Nefarious Troopers, and an area cut from Lumos. Additionally, the room features descriptions of Insomniac's design theory for the Future series, as well as the usual cut weapons.

Ratchet & Clank (2016 game)[]

The Insomniac Museum in the re-imagined Ratchet & Clank is different from past Insomniac Museums, in that it is not modeled after the developers' offices, features no descriptions, and is mostly used as a showcase. This is a large garage with six hangars, each of them containing posters of concept art, screens of imagery throughout the series, and old 3D models of characters, weapons, vehicles, and enemies from throughout the series. It is accessed in challenge mode, but all gold bolts must be earned to unlock all six hangars.

Behind the scenes[]

The original Insomniac Museum for Going Commando was created by Insomniac Games developer Mike Stout in his spare time.[1]
