The 2016 re-imagined game is primarily an unreliable retelling of events by Qwark.
The re-imagined game primarily describes Captain Qwark's account of events. As Qwark is an unreliable narrator, and contradictory events are in-universe fiction (though those which correspond still apply). Please see Project:Bulletin board/Canon for the wiki's coverage of canon.

Grimroth Razz, usually referred to as Grim, is a support character in the Ratchet & Clank 2016 re-imagined game and the Ratchet & Clank movie. He is a fongoid[2] mechanic originally from the Polaris Galaxy,[3] who lives on Veldin as the adopted father of Ratchet, and serves as his mentor. He owns a garage on Veldin where he and Ratchet do repair jobs on his ships. While Grim wants Ratchet to remain on Veldin and work for him, Ratchet dreams of bigger things. He has a brother, Felton Razz, who lives on Pokitaru.

History[]

Early history[]

Grimroth Razz was born in the Polaris Galaxy, and moved to the Solana Galaxy with his twin brother, Felton Razz, to start new lives. While they were young, Grim would dare his brother to do extreme things such as ride down the Torgoff Waterfall in a barrel, which would anger their father.[3] Grim later started his own business repairing ships on Veldin in a garage. He at some point found Ratchet, an infant lombax, and took him under his wing as a student.

Ratchet then grew up in Grim's garage later, idolizing the Galactic Rangers. Ratchet at one time sneaked into the garage and stole Grim's rocket sled, taking it for a test drive. The Galactic Ranger authorities had to pull him over, and Ratchet took a friendly picture with two Solana Troopers, standing next to the sled. Ratchet kept this old photo in his quarters.[4]

Ratchet crashed Mr. Micron's ship, causing Grim to scold him for his recklessness. Ratchet later told Grim he wished to participate in the Galactic Ranger tryouts, though Grim was reluctant, and told him to "dream smaller", not understanding his desires to leave Veldin.[4] Grim eventually reluctantly allowed Ratchet to compete in the tryouts. Ratchet, as Grim expected, was unsuccessful. However, when Clank crash landed on Veldin, Ratchet left with him in Mr. Micron's ship to save Kerwan from an attack, without Grim noticing. After the two saved the planet, Grim saw the news while eating breakfast, and was stunned.[4]

Grimroth Razz message

Grimroth, messaging Ratchet.

After trying to send a message to Captain Qwark, who simply redirected him to his agent, Grim sent Ratchet a message on Batalia via an infobot, informing him that he had been following their adventures and was proud. He asked Ratchet to help his brother, Felton Razz, whom he had not spoken much about before, telling Ratchet that Felton was in distress over the blarg's hydroharvesters stealing the water supply.[5]

Later, after Ratchet failed to stop the destruction of Novalis, he returned to the garage with Grim, resting with the intents on giving him his dreams. Grim, proud of his progress, reassured him, and told him that to be a hero, "you don't have to do big things, just the right ones". Clank later returned to Veldin, convincing Ratchet to rejoin the Rangers, which Grim encouraged. Zed, the former assistant of Chairman Drek, went on to work for Grim.

After Ratchet and Clank destroyed the Deplanetizer, Ratchet returned to Grim's garage to do more work, as he had promised, while Clank followed him.[4]

Characteristics[]

Grim is a large fongoid[2] with two tusks sticking out his mouth, one of which is broken. He has two huge ears falling down behind his head like hair. He wore a brown leather vest along with a tool belt. The sign on his garage depicts him presumably in his youth, with two intact tusks and a pompadour-style hairdo.

Grim is a father figure to Ratchet, often giving him advice, though he wishes Ratchet would stay with him on Veldin, and does not understand his wishes to become a Ranger. When Ratchet proves Grim wrong, Grim becomes proud, though he is still frustrated that Ratchet is behind on work when Ratchet returns to Grim after destroying the Deplanetizer.

Behind the scenes[]

In the 2015 e3 trailer for Ratchet & Clank, Grimroth Razz appears in the background while Ratchet fought off the puffoids on Pokitaru. This means either that Grimroth would be originally escorted across the resort rather than Felton, or that Grim's model was used as a placeholder for Felton Razz at the time.
