Gadgetron vendor from R&C (2002) render

A Gadgetron vendor from Ratchet & Clank.

Gadgetron vendors are vendors operated by Gadgetron Corporation, selling weapons manufactured or distributed by Gadgetron. They are found throughout the Solana Galaxy, and take bolts for currency.

Gadgetron vendors are either blue or orange in color. They appear as a segmented orange or blue box, with four antenna around it. Above the box is a large black "G" floating above, it with the word "Gadgetron" revolving around. When activating the vendor, the segmented pieces of the vendor will separate out to form the menus.

Appearances

Ratchet & Clank (2002)

Blue Gadgetron vendors make their debut in the original Ratchet & Clank. They sell all weapons in the game with the exception of the Bomb Glove available at the start, the R.Y.N.O. purchased from the Shady Salesman on Rilgar, the Suck Cannon obtained on Eudora after "Explore the mills", the Morph-o-Ray obtained on Oltanis after "Search the destroyed city", and the gold weapons purchased in the gold weapons room. The Persuader also provides a discount on all weapons purchased.

These vendors are separated into six screens. The top screen contains a scrolling message describing the product (or gags if left idle). The bottom screen contained weapon icons for either the weapon or ammo to be purchased. The left screen contains an image of the product, while the right contains a transmission of Moby. The middle of the menu contains a rotating model of the selected weapon, while the "Buy" and "Exit options" appear below the left and right screens.

Moby

Moby

Moby[1] is a green reptilian Gadgetron tradesman operating vendors, appearing on screen. He sold weapons to Ratchet, often making comments on Ratchet's purchase and sometimes jokes. He appears to be of the same species as Wendell Lumos, the Gadgetron CEO.

Moby could be seen at the premiere for the Secret Agent Clank movie, appearing near the back of the audience on the right.

Moby from R&C (2016) concept art

Concept art of a possible reimagined Moby.

In demo versions of the game, the names of the audio files of his lines contain the word "moby," suggesting it is his name.[1] This name is not used in the audio files of the final game.

After Moby, no vendors made comments about Ratchet's purchases until the GrummelNet vendors in Tools of Destruction.

While Moby does not appear in the 2016 re-imagined game, there was concept art drawn for a possible re-imagined appearance. The Gadgetron vendor still makes comments about Ratchet's purchases at the vendor, though no green alien is visible, meaning it is unknown if it is Moby making the comments.

Gadgetron vendor from R&C (2016)

A Gadgetron vendor, in Ratchet & Clank

Blue Gadgetron vendors are found throughout the locations. They have an identical appearance to traditional Gadgetron vendors, though the "G" above the box is a blue hologram, with no text revolving around it. These vendors sell all weapons in the game, aside from the Combuster (obtained during "Return to the garage" on Veldin), the Predator Launcher (obtained in the mission "Search the Blarg Warship for weapons" in Nebula G34), and the RYNO (obtained after giving all RYNO holocards to the Shady Salesman on Rilgar). These vendors also sell Raritanium upgrades. A set of these are available for each weapon, and normally provide bonuses to the weapon's damage, area of effect, bolts earned, or more. However, unlocking all upgrades surrounding mystery icons will instead unlock a greater mystery upgrade which alters the weapon more significantly.

Interfacing with these vendors opens a menu with a large space background surrounding them. The left contains the option to fill all weapons and ammo as well as a list of available weapons, which can be cycled up and down through, and hovering over a weapon will show a Ratchet in the middle holding the weapon as a preview (or an image of ammo and nanotech crates for the refill option). The the right contain the cost, a description of the weapon with its icon, and the player's current bolts and Raritanium. Pressing Square will enter a different menu for Raritanium upgrades, where the left lists all possessed weapons and the right shows the stats for what upgrades were obtained.
