Captain Blackstar is a character mentioned in Up Your Arsenal and Tools of Destruction, and a secret boss fought in the Insomniac Museum. He is a space pirate who terrorized the Solana Galaxy before being defeated by Captain Qwark as depicted in the first Qwark vid-comic, Booty is in the Eye of the Beholder. During his reign he became known as the infamous Scourge of Solana.

Though Blackstar is not fought in the main story of Up Your Arsenal, the special edition of the first vid-comic, playable in the Insomniac Museum, still features an early version of the Blackstar boss fight. Additionally, Blackstar is playable in the minigame Pirate vs. Ninja, also present within the Museum, and appears in his own showcase.

History[]

Captain Blackstar was presumably created in the Polaris Galaxy by Emperor Tachyon along with the other space pirates.[1] Blackstar went on to terrorize Solana in the early days of the fifth Solarian equinox,[2] becoming known as the "Scourge of Solana".[3][a] Because his crew was not fond of him, he designed his Blackstar armor to prevent mutiny,[3] made using biostatic nanomytes.[6]

The Galactic Rangers fought ghost pirate robots,[7] likely led by Captain Blackstar. Space pirates also fought Sasha Phyronix in the Starship Phoenix,[8] also possibly led by Blackstar.

Qwark Comic Introduction

Blackstar's pirate ship in the Booty is in the Eye of the Beholder vid-comic.

Depicted in Booty is in the Eye of the Beholder, Captain Qwark, who was already a legend in the galaxy by this point, fought Blackstar's pirates.[b] Captain Blackstar was Qwark's most deadly adversary yet, and was fought by Qwark prior to Dr. Nefarious.[2] Qwark defeated Blackstar's pirate crew, as well as a robotic space eel that haunted his ship, and accepted a fee for his services.[9]

Following Blackstar's demise, the space pirates in the Polaris Galaxy named the Pirate Radio station on Ardolis the Blackstar Memorial Radio Tower in his memory,[10] and his armor was sold by GrummelNet.[3][6]

Characteristics[]

Pirate vs

Pirate vs. Ninja.

Captain Blackstar is a large space pirate with a single cyclopic eye, two tusks in place of a mouth, a peg leg for his right leg, and a large sword. In both Pirate vs. Ninja and the special edition vid-comic, Blackstar's movement is slow, and his main attack is a swing of his sword. In the special edition vid-comic, Blackstar also has a spirit, in the form of a floating blue skull with two eyes, which is capable of moving his sword as well as repossessing his body when it is inactive.

Behind the scenes[]

Blackstar was intended to be the boss of the first Qwark vid-comic, but was cut as he proved too complex.[11]

Notes[]

Annotations[]

  1. Captain Slag, who operated in the Polaris Galaxy, was known as the "Scourge of Polaris",[4][5] a parallel to Blackstar's title.
  2. The story of Captain Blackstar is somewhat ambiguous. The comic narrator questioned his existence, believing Qwark's story to be ridiculous.[2][9] However, the presence of the Blackstar armor[3][6] and the Blackstar Memorial Radio Tower[10] confirms that the captain was real. Additionally, other stories in the Qwark vid-comics, including Dr. Nefarious' invasion of Metropolis in Deja Q All Over Again, and Qwark's hideout in The Shaming of the Q, suggest that Qwark's battle with him did occur (although it was likely embellished), and Captain Darkwater's ghost pirates seen on Merdegraw confirm that ghost pirates exist.
