Drophyd troopers[1] are enemies in Tools of Destruction. They are drophyd infantry units fighting for the Imperial Army, with nanotech combat armor and ranged weapons, as opposed to their melee drophyd sentry counterparts. Some drophyd troopers employ shields that block low caliber weapon attacks, while others use cloaking devices.

Ratchet and Clank first encountered them in Metropolis, Kerwan, during Emperor Tachyon's invasion of the planet. The shielded troopers are first fought in Stratus City, Kortog, while the cloaked troopers are fought on Zordoom Prison, Viceron. Unlike sentries, an elite variant of the troopers were later fought on Reepor and Fastoon.

Characteristics[]

Drophyd troopers have a humanoid nanotech suit similar to their sentry counterparts, but with laser guns in the shape of a Gatling gun in place of their arms. Drophyd troopers enter battle either through teleportation or by Tachyon transport ship. Some drophyd troopers use jetpacks and hover in the air.

Shielded troopers carry a large, red riot shield that they carry with their left arm. The cloaked drophyd troopers have a cloaking device on their back, and are difficult to see aside from a strange distortion around their position.

The elite troopers wear thicker, all-black armor even covering their visor.

Combat[]

The gunfire from drophyd troopers is relatively easy to avoid, and their durability is not too high in comparison to other enemies. However, drophyd troopers can become cumbersome to fight when multiple are grouped together. The Fusion Grenade is strong against them in groups, but as singular enemies, the Combuster is effective; doing so will require the player to strafe to avoid their attacks, however.

Shielded drophyd troopers can be tougher to deal with, as their shields block low caliber attacks from the Combuster, Shard Reaper, and other non-explosive weapons. The Fusion Grenade and Negotiator and other stronger weapons can destroy their shields, though their shields can be neutralized with the Shock Ravager or Groovitron. Another option is to flank them and attack from behind.

Drophyd troopers using cloaking devices will attack when Ratchet is near, and cannot be targeted with weapons such as the Predator Launcher or Nano-Swarmers. Hitting them will cause their shield to disappear for a bit, meaning area-of-effect weapons such as the Shard Reaper and Negotiator are effective against them.

The drophyds who hover in the air cannot be reached easily with close ranged weapons. This makes it more imperative to use weapons such as the Negotiator or Buzz Blades against them.

Behind the scenes[]

The drophyd trooper appears as a downloadable skin for the Full Frontal Assault multiplayer as part of the Intergalactic Foot Soldier Pack.[2][citation needed]
