Drek Industries (also known as Blarg Industries[1]) was a blarg company ran by Chairman Alonzo Drek that are featured as the main antagonists in Ratchet & Clank, as well as the 2016 re-imagined game and movie. It was a manufacturer of vehicles, weaponry, and robotics, as well as a terraforming company with the express goal of creating a new planet to replace the polluted blarg homeworld of Orxon.
Drek Industries harvested pieces of several planets in the Solana Galaxy in order to piece together their own perfect new planet, destroying the harvested planets in the process. This led them to be opposed by Ratchet and Clank, who eventually stopped the company. Following Drek's defeat and the destruction of the Deplanetizer, Drek Industries has been inactive, and is presumed defunct.
History[]
Pre-Ratchet & Clank[]
Drek Industries were responsible for polluting Orxon, making it uninhabitable.[2] Following this, Chairman Drek sought to build a new planet. Though he told the blarg and the rest of the galaxy that he was motivated by the desire to create a new home for his people,[3] he was actually motivated by profit, and Drek Industries would pollute the next world.[2] Drek Industries signed an endorsement deal with Captain Qwark, making him the highly paid spokesperson for the new planet.[4]
One of Drek Industries' early targets was planet Novalis, targeted for its renowned waterworks among other things.[5] Drek Industries also sent a robot attack force, consisting of peckbots and birdbots, as well as blarg bombers. Novalis' chairman, Agnogg Buckwash, attempted to protest the attack.
At some point, Drek Industries built a space station in Nebula G34, the Blarg Tactical Research Station, testing mutated alien creatures, as well new as gadgets.
Ratchet & Clank[]
On Quartu, a Drek Industries sentry-bot factory produced a defect, Clank. Clank fled the factory after seeing an infobot containing Drek's plan, and Drek Industries sent two electroids to shoot Clank down. Clank crash landed on Veldin, where he met a lombax named Ratchet. The two set off to find Captain Qwark and fight Drek, unaware that Qwark was employed by Drek. As they set off to Novalis, Drek dismissed Agnogg Buckwash, who had worn out his patience.
Drek Industries later sent blarg forces to Kerwan in search of Ratchet and Clank when they arrived. Around this time, Drek's Robot Lieutenant was deployed to Eudora, along with a robotic lumberjack force consisting of sawbots and axebots to harvest the planet's trees, as well as a few blarg troopers for reinforcements. Shortly after, after Qwark lured Ratchet and Clank into a trap on his base on Umbris, he betrayed them, feeding them to the blargian snagglebeast. Ratchet and Clank defeated the snagglebeast and escaped, leading Drek to scold Qwark.
Drek Industries also sent an army consisting of blarg destroyers and blarg minifighters in the air, as well as cannonball tanks, blarg paratroopers and blarg bombthrowers on the ground, to Batalia, an attack staged from their Blarg Depot on Gaspar. Drek Industries also dumped toxic chemicals into the waters on Pokitaru with blarg waste disposal tankers.
Searching for a new orbital position for the new planet, Drek Industries created the PlanetBuster Maximus from their factory on Hoven, which would destroy the planet occupying the current orbital position. However, Ratchet and Clank destroyed the planetbuster, prompting them to work on a replacement, the Deplanetizer superlaser. Meanwhile, Drek Industries built the Gemlik Base in the orbit of planet Oltanis, aiming to attack Oltanis to steal its power generators.[6] Drek also sent Qwark to use his starfighter to defeat Ratchet and Clank here. The attack on Oltanis was successful, but Qwark was defeated.
Drek therefore sent blarg elite commandos to defeat Ratchet and Clank when they went to Kalebo III. Meanwhile, the Deplanetizer had found its target: Veldin, occupying the perfect orbit for his new planet. Ratchet and Clank found Drek on the Deplanetizer, and after a long battle, sent Drek in his Ultra Supreme Executive Chairman Drek-Mech off to the new planet, then destroyed the new planet with Drek still on it.
Re-imagined[]
In the film and Qwark's version of its events, Drek Industries was a company based in Skorg City on planet Quartu, the blarg homeworld. Drek Industries, under Chairman Alonzo Drek's father, had polluted Quartu, leading his son Alonzo Drek to work on a new home for his people, named New Quartu. To do this, Drek teamed up with former Galactic Ranger, Dr. Nefarious, to build a Deplanetizer, which would destroy a planet, and then harvest its pieces for the new world.
After the Deplanetizer destroyed uninhabited planets, this caught the notice of the Galactic Rangers. Drek commissioned Nefarious to create a warbot army led by Victor Von Ion to attack Kerwan and destroy the Rangers in the Hall of Heroes. However, one warbot defect, Clank, fled the planet, narrowly evading Victor Von Ion, but crash-landing on Veldin, where he met Ratchet. Drek Industries sent a small force to Veldin to find the defect, but were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Drek Industries sent a force of blarg to attack planets Aridia and Novalis, after Skidd McMarx revealed secret plans for the hydroharvesters to harvest water for their new world. Along with traditional blarg forces, Drek Industries also sent amoeboids and a robotic force of birdbots and peckbots to Novalis, in an attempt to take down Agnogg Buckwash, the uncle of Skidd McMarx.
The Drek Industries warbot army attacked Kerwan, though Ratchet and Clank were able to destroy the blarg battleship and stop the invasion. The blarg mercenaries attempted to defeat them after, but were unsuccessful. Later, Drek Industries sent a force of amoeboids to attack Rilgar, though they were defeated by Ratchet and Clank as well as the local extermibots. Ratchet and Clank also visited the Blarg Tactical Research Station in Nebula G34, defeating Drek Industries' experimental controlled blargian snagglebeast, as well as obtaining their Predator Launcher prototype.
Drek Industries sent battleships to attack Batalia, in order to destroy the Starwatch Defense Cannon and create safe passage for many of their harvesters. They also sent hydroharvesters to Pokitaru to drain the planet's water supply. Afterwards, the Galactic Rangers attacked Quartu, but were unable to stop Drek. Here, Drek convinced Captain Qwark to betray the Rangers. Drek Industries set its next target for the Deplanetizer to destroy: Novalis, a populated planet.
The Rangers attempted to stop the Deplanetizer, but Qwark's betrayal caused them to fail. The Deplanetizer acquired a new target: Umbris, a planet with an unstable core. However, this was coordinated entirely by Dr. Nefarious, as destroying Umbris' core when all planets in the star system aligned would destroy the entire star system. Drek Industries then sent an invasion force to Kalebo III to stop the Rangers, but were unsuccessful. As the Rangers took off to the Deplanetizer to stop it destroying Umbris, Dr. Nefarious betrayed Drek, transforming him to a sheep with the Sheepinator, and blasting him off to New Quartu. The Rangers then stopped Nefarious and the Deplanetizer, at which point Drek Industries was then presumed defunct.
After Ratchet & Clank[]
Following the defeat of Chairman Drek, designs for some of Drek Industries' inventions were acquired by other manufacturers and made available for purchase.
By the events of Rift Apart, Robomutts were often bought in bulk by the Goons-4-Less for usage in missions to hunt down targets.
Individuals[]
Major[]
- Ultimate Supreme Executive Chairman Drek: The CEO of Drek Industries. In the original, Drek seeks to steal large pieces from several planets to create a new planet for his people after purposely polluting their original homeworld for the sake of profit, but was defeated and vanquished by Ratchet by Clank.
- In the re-imagining, Drek's goal was almost the same, but instead he was betrayed by Dr. Nefarious, who sent him to his new planet to perish.
- Captain Qwark: Qwark was once the Solana Galaxy's greatest hero, but then decided to assist Drek in his plan to conquer the galaxy in exchange for being the new spokesman for his new planet. He attempted to kill Ratchet and Clank to keep them from interfering, but was defeated in a spaceship battle with them, and then went into hiding on Oltanis afterwards.
- In the re-imagining, Qwark was the leader of the Galactic Rangers until Drek persuaded him to his cause by playing on his jealousy of Ratchet. By the end, he realizes his mistake and attempts to make amends.
- Dr. Nefarious: In the re-imagining, Nefarious became Drek Industries' top scientist after escaping from prison and faking his death. However, he then betrayed Drek and prepared to destroy an entire system out of spite, but was stopped by Ratchet.
- Victor Von Ion: In the re-imagining, Victor was Drek's top-enforcer who carried out all of his orders without mercy. However, he had a bit of a rusting problem, which allowed Clank to defeat him.
- Zed: In the re-imagining, Zed was Drek's personal assistant, but was then abandoned by him and arrested by the Galactic Rangers. He later reformed and now works as Grimroth Razz's assistant.
Minor[]
- Robot Lieutenant: In the original, the lieutenant was one of Drek's top-enforcers who aided him in his plot, but was then scared off by Ratchet and Clank.
- Blarg Scientists: In the re-imagining, at least in Qwark's re-telling of the events, Blarg scientists worked diligently on building Drek Industries' devices under duress
- In the re-imagining, at least in Qwark's re-telling of the events, a scientist was on the Blarg Tactical Research Station and used a mind-control helmet to control of a Blargian snagglebeast, but it was defeated by Ratchet.
- Brain Scientist: In the re-imagining, at least in Qwark's re-telling of the events, one Blarg scientist on Gaspar offered Ratchet a new XK-81 Jetpack in exchange for telepathopus brains.
