Clank Fu is a recurring martial arts style used by Clank (and his replica Klunk) in the Ratchet & Clank series. The style refers to Clank's close-quarters combat and stealth takedown techniques. The style was first seen in the fiction holovision series, Secret Agent Clank, before Clank performed them outside the show.

History[]

Up Your Arsenal[]

Clank used Clank Fu in the episode of Secret Agent Clank seen in the opening cutscene, when fighting ninja bots. The style was not yet named, as the director referred to them only as "kung-fu".[1]

Secret Agent Clank[]

Clank utilized Clank Fu often both in battle and when performing silent stealth takedowns. The basics of Clank Fu were: "Be like water, young grasshopper".[2]

Throughout the game, Clank downloaded new moves as purchased from vendors operated by the Agency. His regular Clank Fu attack consisted of a three-hit combo, but more complex additional moves included the Agent Air Strike,[2] a fourth kick at the end of his 3-hit combo, and a blast from his Jet Boots to hit an enemy in a 5-hit combo. The Jet Boots hit was augmented by replacing the Jet Boot engine with the thrusters from a prize-winning skyboard jet in a final upgrade.[3]

Klunk had also practiced Clank Fu.[4] In "All The Marbles", the two fought, giving Clank an opportunity to use his techniques to outmatch Klunk.

In All 4 One, Clank's melee attack was Clank Fu. Clank attacks using karate chops, a spinning move and his throwing attack is one of his Heli-Pack blades, Clank's Hyper-strike involved him using a double axe handle - putting his hands together and smashing them down into enemies.

Clank also utilized Clank Fu while on board the Starship Phoenix II in Full Frontal Assault, and in the Netherverse in Into the Nexus.

In Secret Agent Clank, Clank Fu comprises Clank's basic moves, his Agent Air Strike,[2], and three downloads. The Download Clank Fu Kick adds a fourth powerful kick to a 3-hit melee combo, Download Clank Fu Hot Foot launches a boost from the Jet Boots to enemy's face after the fourth kick if it was used, and Download Hot Foot 2.1 Beta adds more power to the normal Clank Fu Hot Foot.

In practice Agent Clank should never actually rely on using his melee attacks, as they are far too risky compared to ranged weapons, or even the melee-based Holo-Knuckles.

In All 4 One, Clank Fu simply refers to Clank's normal melee attacks.

Behind the scenes[]

Clank Fu is based on Kung-Fu (功夫), a Chinese martial arts style.
