The Doppelbanger is a weapon in All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault, manufactured by GrummelNet Industries. It is a launcher, similar to the Decoy Glove, used to deploy customized robotic decoys of the user, which use pre-recorded taunts to draw enemy attention. Originally designed to help husbands skip out on date night, the robotic doubles were repurposed as battlefield decoys when their wives found them preferable to the real thing.[1]
The Doppelbanger can be upgraded through use in Full Frontal Assault to become the Alpha Doppelbanger.
The decoys created by the Doppelbanger are stationary robots that vaguely resemble the user. They lack legs and have weapons for arms but maintain a silhouette similar to their operator.
Gameplay[]
All 4 One[]
A Doppelbanger being deployed by Ratchet.
The Doppelbanger is first available at the Village Entrance in the Aldaros Plains for 5,000 bolts. A single upgrade becomes available at the Rehabitation Center segment of N.E.S.T., with the remaining upgrades unlocking at the Kaleero Trail in Terawatt Forest. It is a special weapon usable only by Ratchet.
The Doppelbanger does not upgrade with use, but its ammo capacity can be increased for 10,000 bolts and its power for 10,000 bolts. After purchasing both upgrades, an elite upgrade becomes available for 30,000 bolts, allowing the decoys to fire at enemies using their arm-mounted turrets.
Full Frontal Assault[]
The Doppelbanger returns in Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, where it can be used by Ratchet, Clank, and Captain Qwark. It is obtained from weapon pods in the campaign, and nodes in multiplayer.
Unlike in All 4 One, the decoys have functional turrets at V1, making them immediately useful in combat. Once upgraded to V3, the weapon becomes the Alpha Doppelbanger, featuring larger red decoys with projectiles that deal a small area of effect on hit. As many Doppelbangers can be deployed as the player has ammo for them, and at V5, the max ammo is 6. The Doppelbanger does not expire on its own either, making them a formidable force if deployed all at once.
In the campaign, the Doppelbanger is an incredibly effective weapon at higher levels. Placing four or more in a row will form a wall that blocks grungarian marauders and forces them to go around, while continuously being attacked. The decoy effect is ignored as the marauders will single-mindedly head for the base, which works in the weapon's favor as they thus last until manually replaced. This is effective against enemies bar elite grungarian bombers and grungarian tanks, as both are too tough and the tanks will roll through them.
