The Deserter is a character in Ratchet & Clank, with a cameo in Up Your Arsenal. He was a young and cowardly soldier on Batalia who joined the army to earn enough money to go to college, unaware that he would end up in a war.[1] He went AWOL during the battle against the blarg on Fort Krontos, along with the rest of the Commando's battalion.[2]

The Deserter with Ratchet and Clank.

After "Rind the grind rail", Ratchet and Clank found the Deserter lost on a platform while fleeing the conflict. The Deserter asked for 2,000 bolts to buy his infobot, that way he can pay for bus fare to get back home.[1] After the two paid him, he gave them an infobot with information on the Pilot's Helmet located on planet Gaspar, wished them luck with their quest, and dived to the ocean below.

The Deserter appeared two years later watching the premiere for the Secret Agent Clank film.

Behind the scenes

Concept art for the original game

The Deserter was voiced by Jim Ward, the voice of Captain Qwark.

In the 2016 re-imagined game, the Deserter does not appear. Instead, when Ratchet and Clank reach the end of the grind rail on Batalia, they simply find an infobot where he was originally located, which gives them an entirely different transmission.
