Cutlassies are hovering, ball-shaped pirates, armed with whirling blades. They are built by the Space Pirates from scrap they looted from raids across the galaxy and are the swarmer enemy type of the Space Pirate enemy faction in Rift Apart.

They bear a strong resemblance to the bladeball enemies from the 2016 reimagining.

History[]

Rift Apart[]

The Cutlassies first appear at Zurkie's Battleplex during the Bronze Cup challenges "Welcoming Committee" and "Monsieur François", where Rivet fights several pirates to win a signal booster for Clank from Pierre Le Fer. Later they are fought in the Silver Cup challenge "The Mangling".

On planet Savali, Ratchet encounters a crashed Space Pirate ship inside a cavern with a Spybot on the deck. When he collects it, booby trap explosives detonate and several Cutlassies ambush him. Kit remarks that the pirates frequent this sector.

On Torren IV the Cutlassies are fought during the Space Pirate raid of Molonoth Gulch and at their home base on Ardolis. At the Pirate Base on Ardolis, they can be seen dancing on the dance floor of the Blackstar Landing.

Combat[]

The Cutlassies attack in large groups to try and overwhelm you with sheer numbers and melee attacks. Since they only have one hit point, weapons like the Burst Pistol and Buzz Blades work very well on them. The Lightning Strike, when it is upgraded with raritanium to create chain lightning between foes is optimal to use against one hit kill swarmer enemies like the Cutlassies, allowing you to wipe out groups of them with even one shot from the weapon. That said, it is not recommended you use the Shatterbomb, Drillhound or Warmonger on them, since they have limited ammo that's better put to use against more powerful foes.

They have a noticeable wind up animation just before they attack, giving you a short moment to dodge. Their spinning blade attack when they get close to Ratchet or Rivet has a slight lock-on to the lombaxes, making jumping out of their way difficult and leaving the best method to dodge their attacks with being the Phantom Dash. However if you allow several of them to get too close and surround you, you will be attacked again quickly after emerging from the Dash and take a hit. When fighting them amongst other types of Space Pirates, they can sometimes become hard to keep track of and surprise attack you from a blind spot while you had your attention on more powerful enemies.
