Blarg bombthrowers[1] are enemies in Ratchet & Clank and the 2016 re-imagined game. In the former, they are encountered in Fort Krontos, Batalia, while in the latter, they are encountered on several more planets. They are blarg foot soldiers working for Drek Industries, closely resembling blarg troopers that attack primarily by throwing bombs at Ratchet and Clank from a vantage point, or after hiding under the ground.

History

Ratchet & Clank

Blarg bombthrowers are encountered only on Batalia, during the mission "Meet the Commando at city", most prominently in the jungle area. They would appear from batches of plants, jumping out to throw a bomb at Ratchet, before running to another bush to hide in.

Re-imagined

The 2016 re-imagined game is primarily an unreliable retelling of events by Qwark.
The re-imagined game primarily describes Captain Qwark's account of events. As Qwark is an unreliable narrator, and contradictory events are in-universe fiction (though those which correspond still apply). Please see Project:Bulletin board/Canon for the wiki's coverage of canon.

In Qwark's version of events, the blarg bombthrower appears much more frequently and preferred to attack Ratchet by throwing bombs from a high vantage. They were first encountered in the Blarg Research Outpost, Gaspar, when Ratchet infiltrated the Blarg Depot during "Fight the Blarg", and again out in the Telepathopus Fields while collecting telepathopus brains in "Trade 20 brains for an infobot" and onwards. Later, they were then encountered on Batalia during "Travel to the Fort", in which they fought Ratchet and Cora Veralux by throwing bombs, hiding in the snow, and jumping out to fire again. They were then encountered inside Fort Krontos during "Get to the Turret", fought alongside warbots, throwing bombs at Ratchet from a higher vantage point.

Blarg bombthrowers were fought again in Ratchet's first visit to the Deplanetizer, during "Head to the Bridge". They were then fought when the blarg attacked the Gadgetron Headquarters on Kalebo III, during "Find the Focus Lab". Finally, they were fought upon Ratchet's return to the Deplanetizer in "Head to the Core".

Characteristics

Blarg bombthrowers closely resemble blarg troopers in physique and attire. They wear gray and black armor, as well as a heavy backpack. They also roughly match Ratchet in height. In the re-imagined release, bombthrowers are distinct in that they wear green goggles, and their backpacks glow green with two large antennae.

Blarg bombthrowers throw their bombs from a distance and mostly keep out of harm's way, at which point they are effectively invincible. On Batalia, they will hide in the nearby plant life below ground, spotted by the long antenna from their backpacks visible from within the plants. On other planets, they instead fire from a vantage point, such as a ledge.

Combat

In the original release, bombthrowers hide in patches of a plant, throw their bombs at Ratchet in medium range. Bombs will either explode on contact or after a short time, though the blast radius is relatively small and they can be dodged. After throwing a bomb, they will flee to hide under a different plant. The main threat is that they are difficult to aim at as they quickly hide underground. Therefore, the Glove of Doom or Bomb Glove can defeat them, as both weapons will aim more or less automatically and defeat them immediately.

In the re-imagined release, bombthrowers appear more frequently and are a much larger threat. Their bombs are instead thrown at a long range, and will always explode on contact, meaning constantly moving to dodge their bombs is a necessity. They will also throw multiple bombs but will run when approached in a closer range, as they are defeated quickly. As bombthrowers are often fought alongside enemies such as the warbots, which are tougher and absorb most damage, it is better instead to shoot them from range and destroy them if possible to remove their bombs as a threat and focus on other weapons. From a vantage point, they can be killed at range with weapons such as the Plasma Striker or Warmonger. When attacking them on the ground, using the Pixelizer can hit many at once and also quickly defeat them. On Batalia, before they run to hide in the plants, the player should use the Groovitron to disable and then kill them.
