The Agorian Battleplex was a location and battle arena in A Crack in Time. It was an agorian space station located in the Korthos Sector of the Polaris Galaxy. The station housed the Battleplex Arena, where gladiatorial combat and blood sports took place, viewed by agorian audiences. The space station's lobby also had a video game arcade, showcasing the videogame My Blaster Runs Hot. Mac Mackeroy also hosted a comedy show at the Battleplex's Moonlight Lounge.
Ratchet came to the Agorian Battleplex after Captain Qwark was captured by them. Ratchet also sought to obtain the Nefarious Security Card, allowing him to gain access to the Tombli Outpost on planet Zanifar.
History[]
Before A Crack in Time[]
The Agorian Battleplex was managed by the Agorian Council for Equal-Opportunity Dismemberment, who set prizes and participants.[1][2][a] When agorians realized the Battleplex violated their Impenetrable Code of Agorian Honor, they rewrote their bylaws to allow it, leading to the new Semi-Impenetrable Code of Agorian Honor, found in the Hall of Knowledge.[4] The battleplex originally had referees.[7]
A number of gladiators were honored with statues in the Battleplex lobby. One was Osiris the Malevolent, a warrior hatched sometime during the vernal equinox in the Year of the Slörg Rat, revered as the "King of the War Groks" for killing, taming, or insulting seventy, but ironically killed by a war grok in the Year of the War Grok. Another was Ivan the Beautiful, a ladies' man with good looks and dance moves whose opponents sometimes refused to fight him, but was killed by Osiris after Osiris' wife, Donna the Promiscuous, sent him a love letter.[5]
A third was Percy the Incongruous, a warrior born during the autumnal equinox in the Year of the Sand Weasel who enrolled in his deathmatch at two years old but died after being the first gladiator to wear roller skates and a blindfold into battle, causing him to skate into a pool of lava. The fourth was named Rogan the Mediocre, who received a statue solely for having an uncle on the Agorian Council for Equal-Opportunity Dismemberment and was killed by a hydra tank before the statue was complete.[5]
When Kaden was a teenager (around 15-16 years old), after seeing an ad for the Battleplex, he stole Alister Azimuth's father's trillium harvester and set out for the Battleplex, using his own father's ID to enter the gold tournament. He won the tournament but was grounded by his father for a month afterward.[8] Rumors of his victory persisted,[4] though the agorians never admitted to it.[8]
All referees at the Agorian Battleplex were executed the summer prior to A Crack in Time.[7]
A Crack in Time[]
The battleplex was sponsored by Megacorp, promoting the crotchitizer. It also ran a raffle in which a prize was an all-expense-paid trip to Quantos.[7]
Mac Mackeroy hosted a comedy show at the Battleplex for three months, describing the battleplex as "the most explosive fight venue this side of the Vartan Nebula".[9] Due to poor sales, he dropped the price from four bolts per person to free,[10] despite spending large sums renting the venue.[11] To raise money, Mackeroy engaged in betting on fights, and ill-placed bets on longshots led to him owing large debts, begging fans to donate.[12] He was able to obtain an extension on the debt, despite the agorians to whom he owed money holding him upside down in a bathroom stall to demand payment.[13]
After Captain Qwark grated on the fongoids he kept company with, they told him about the agorians and their hatred for Dr. Nefarious, paying the agorians to pick Qwark up so he could convince them to fight alongside Ratchet.[14] In trying to befriend them, Qwark described himself as a "thrill-seeking warrior with a thirst for battle", leading them to enter him in the Battleplex tournament and sentencing him to death.[15][16] The Battleplex announcer described Qwark's fighting style as "a mixture of Crouching Kitten and Sleeping Possum" and mocked the idea of Qwark's stint as a superhero in the Bogon and Solana galaxies.[17]
Around the Korthos Sector, a gladiator named Ortax the Merciless was ambushed by his rival, Serus the Cheat, hoping to win by forfeit.[18] In "Escort Ortax the Merciless", Ratchet towed him to the Battleplex so he could compete.
In "Save Qwark from the Agorians", Ratchet came and defeated the fighters in the Bronze Tournament while Qwark hid away. After fighting and defeating a War Grok, Qwark came out of hiding and, owing to his time with the Nabla tribesmen at the Florana jungle, refused to kill the War Grok, and instead tamed and rode it, naming it "Snowball".[17] For winning the Bronze Tournament, Ratchet was heralded on space radio as the first non-agorian to win a tournament at the Battleplex,[19] despite Kaden having won it years prior.[8][b] The agorian Local Hunter's Union 865 protested Ratchet's involvement, though this simply led to a battle against them in the Gold Cup.[20]
Ratchet participated in the Raritanium Tournament in "Return to the Battleplex", after agorians, sour about Ratchet's last victory, had Mac Mackeroy contact Ratchet to inform him of a new tournament opening.[21]
The Agorian Battleplex had commuter starships connected to Axiom City Spaceport.[22]
After A Crack in Time[]
About one year after A Crack in Time, in the Ratchet & Clank comic, General Glahm revealed that Artemis Zogg had destroyed the Agorian Battleplex.[23]
Layout[]
The Agorian Battleplex was shaped similarly to a large cruise ship. It had beaming spotlights dotted around the exterior and a number of thrusters on the back, suggesting it to be a mobile vehicle that simply operated as a space station.
Patrons of and contenders in the battleplex entered through a ship hangar bay where starships parked, and were carried away on conveyer belts, released when the patron left. An elevator then led to the lobby, where a red carpet led to the teleporter to enter the arena. Across the lobby were the statues of the four historical battleplex fighters, lines of My Blaster Runs Hot arcade machines, and in the middle of the room, a large hologram of Mac Mackeroy.
The arena itself was a vast lava-filled room. Depending on the challenge, different platforms would form the arena ground in the middle, while spectators sat in podiums overlooking the middle.
Arena challenges[]
The arena holds four tournaments with five battles each, each netting you an exclusive weapon at the end of the tournament. Each tournament must be completed in order, but only the Bronze Cup is required to beat the game. There are two championships: the first one is unlocked when jumping to the Korthos Sector, and the second one is unlocked after Mac has contacted Ratchet after he entered the Bernilius Sector, starting the mission "Return to the Battleplex".
Although the first Championship can be attempted after entering the Korthos Sector, it is recommended to complete Lumos first.
Winning the Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Raritanium Cups will unlock the bronze trophies "Bronze Champion", "Silver Champion", "Gold Champion", and "Raritanium Champion", respectively.

Return to Sender | Defeat 10 agorians with their own bombs! | Constructo Bomb Shrapnel Upgrade mod and 2,500 bolts. | 850 bolts. |
Death From Above | Thanks to a "design your own death course" contest held by the agorians, one sadistic child's dream has become your nightmare. Survive 3 waves of combat while navigating an array of deadly sinking platforms! | RYNO V Holo-plan and 3,000 bolts. | 1,000 bolts. |
Bros Before Foes | Partner up with a gladiator of "modest intelligence" for a series of battles, culminating in an agorian rite of passage called "Mauling by war grok". | Negotiator, Nefarious Security Card and 3,500 bolts. | 1,150 bolts. |
Welcoming Party[]
The first challenge is a basic arena combat challenge comprising five rounds against enemies. In the first round, pyrospinners are fought; while the second and third round introduces both pyrospinners and thrashers. These are weaker enemies best defeated with weaker weapons like the Constructo Pistol, Tesla Spikes. A Mr. Zurkon can also help out to watch Ratchet's back.
The fourth wave include a single agorian soldier amidst several thrashers. The fifth wave includes a few thrashers and a group of agorian warriors, soldiers, and one agorian phalanx. The Groovitron Glove can be helpful if they overwhelm Ratchet, especially when combined with the Plasma Striker while they are occupied. Another benefit to the Groovitron Glove is that the arena always refills your ammo upon starting a challenge, making it much more convenient to ignore its low ammo capacity.
Because enemies often spawn in clusters, area-of-effect weapons (namely the Dynamo of Doom, Sonic Eruptor, or Constructo Bomb) can be effective at dealing damage to many right as they spawn in. while otherwise they should be defeated with stronger weapons, such as the Dynamo of Doom and Plasma Striker.
Armageddon Outta Here[]
This is a five-round gladiator challenge but with hazards on either side of the arena. A mix of pyrospinners, thrashers, agorian soldiers, and agorian warriors are fought, and later rounds introduce the agorian hunters which fight with flails. These are mid-range agorians whose flails can be dodged with side jumps, but can also be avoided by staying far enough away. Keeping a distance (or distracting) and using the Plasma Striker is effective when the option is available.
Avoiding hazards is important (particularly with lower armor and on higher difficulty), and requires constant movement. Keeping Tesla Spikes and a Mr. Zurkon active at all times is recommended as the agorians will constantly spawn along the edge of the arena, ensuring you are surrounded at all times.
Return to Sender[]
This is a challenge against agorian grenadiers, with no weapons available except the OmniWrench, where the player must defeat ten of the grenadiers with their own bombs. Agorian grenadiers throw bombs that will explode if they hit Ratchet, or explode after some time on the ground. The bombs can be avoided, or (as is the objective of the challenge) picked up with the OmniWrench (mid-air with a wrench throw, or on the ground) and then tossed right back at the grenadiers. Some grenadiers have exoshields, which need to be removed before the bombs are effective.
Death From Above[]
This is a challenge against three waves fought on an arena with platforms that occasionally sink into the lava. The enemies here are grenadiers and hunters on elevated platforms away from Ratchet's part of the arena. The grenadiers can be defeated either by throwing their bombs back at them or with any other ranged weapon; the hunters' flaming flails can be shot mid-air but not thrown back.
It is important to stay moving throughout the challenge so as to both avoid the sinking platforms and the continuous bombardment being thrown at you. When options present themselves, the Plasma Striker is very effective against the distant agorians, though the Constructo Pistol is a great second choice. Bombs can be thrown back at enemies if no other good option exists.
Bros Before Foes[]
This is a challenge against three waves of enemies, followed by a boss battle. Though Captain Qwark joins Ratchet, he provides little supplementary firepower. For the first three waves, which are fought against a mix of all types of arena enemies, the usual tactics apply.
The war grok attacks in melee range only, with attacks that lunge or slam forward. It is very fast, and can close the gap to Ratchet quickly. However, well-timed backflips can avoid many of these attacks. At times, the war grok will slam the arena floor, causing Ratchet to leap into the air. Partway through the battle, the war grok also deploys smaller swarmer enemies which spit acid at Ratchet.
It is best to be constantly on the move against the war grok so as to keep at a distance and kite around it. If it proves challenging to evade, the Groovitron Glove can stop it briefly, which also allows the Plasma Striker to be used against its weakpoints. You only need to deplete the war grok of around 45% of its total health before the fight is over. The Dynamo of Doom and Constructo Bomb, next to the Plasma Striker are likely your strongest weapons available, whereas the Tesla Spikes and Mr. Zurkon are good for support (as well as against the swarmer parasites).

Gone in 60 Seconds | Defeat 60 enemies in 60 seconds! | Gold bolt and 4,000 bolts | 1,300 bolts |
Fun With Fusion Turrets | The vullards donated a fusion turret to the Battleplex as a peace offering. To show their appreciation, the agorians have offered to suspend their next invasion and instead focus their attention on you! Use the turret to destroy 50 Agorian clusterbombs! | Zoni and 4,500 bolts | 1,500 bolts |
The Art of Negotiation | The Agorian Council for Equal-Opportunity Dismemberment feels your arsenal is a tad excessive. Survive an onslaught of bloodthirsty gladiators using only the wrench and your trusty Negotiator. | Constructo Pistol Impactor Upgrade mod and 5,000 bolts | 1,500 bolts |
Name Your Poison | Gladiators will be exposed to Virox poison gas, a failed GrummelNet aftershave repurposed as a lethal toxin and used in agorian torture pits across the galaxy. The only way to shut it down is to defeat your opponents! | Box Basher 2000 and 5,500 bolts | 1,800 bolts |
Triumvirate Of Terror | Test your might against the elite hydra tank, a fully-armored agorian prototype harnessing electrostorm fission shockers, omniflux pulse blasters, and detachable hydra turrets. Oh, and cup holders. | Spiral of Death and 6,000 bolts |
Gone in 60 Seconds[]
This challenge requires 60 enemies to be killed in under 60 seconds, consisting of pyrospinners and thrashers. Area-of-effect weapons like the Sonic Eruptor, Constructo Bomb, and Tesla Spikes should be relied on as they can rack up kills quickly. Deploy Mr. Zurkon for additional firepower. Killing enemies when clustered together will help complete the task faster.
Fun With Fusion Turrets[]
This challenge requires the player to destroy 50 clusterbombs in the air with the fusion turret. There is no need to shoot the agorian hunters at all; simply shoot the bombs before they hit Ratchet to complete the challenge.
The Art of Negotiation[]
This is a four-wave challenge where only the Negotiator and the wrench can be used. Agorian grenadiers and hunters (sometimes with exoshields) spawn onto elevated platforms and fire grenades or clusterbombs from a distance, while agorian warriors and thrashers spawn on Ratchet's platform. Prioritize destroying the enemies that appear on Ratchet's arena, as the enemies on elevated platforms can be more easily avoided.
Part of the difficulty in this challenges comes from being forced to use the Negotiator, as it is likely still only at V1 due to how recently it was acquired. Ammo crates appear often enough that running out of ammo is generally not a problem, but relying on the throwable grenades against the grenadiers is generally more convenient.
Name Your Poison[]
This is a three-wave challenge where poison fills the arena, causing Ratchet to lose nanotech over time. Various agorians and thrashers are fought and should be defeated as quickly as possible before the poison causes too much harm to Ratchet.
Triumvirate of Terror[]
This challenge is a boss battle against an elite hydra tank. This is a durable boss that can attack both by charging in toward Ratchet to deal melee damage and by spitting lightning from its heads. The lightning can be jumped over to avoid it, while the charges should be avoided by running.
After losing a third of its health each time, it will create a forcefield and heal up, while also releasing shockwaves. It is best to jump over the first shockwave, and use the kinetic tether to remove a fuse and destroy a head. This also makes the fight much easier over time, as each head less reduces its potential attack output by a third as well.
Recommended weapons are the Plasma Striker coupled with the Groovitron, the Negotiator, Constructo Bomb, Dynamo of Doom, and both Tesla Spikes and Mr. Zurkon as backup.
Gold Cup[]
Challenge | Description | Prizes per completion | |
---|---|---|---|
First | Second | ||
Untouchable | A challenge for the hardest of the core: defeat 5 rounds of enemies without taking a single hit! | Gold bolt and 6,500 bolts. | 2,150 bolts. |
Endangered Species | Local Hunter's Union 865 has formally protested your participation in this competition. To assuage their anger, the council has agreed to let them all take you on at once! Can you survive 3 minutes alone with a battalion of agorian thugs? | Zoni and 7,500 bolts. | 2,500 bolts. |
The Quick and the Dead | A group of Terachnoids has been spreading rumors that you mocked the agorians' underdeveloped legs. As a result, they've decided to take their revenge with the help of some thrashers. Defeat all 100 of them before the timer runs out! | Armor Magnetizer and 8,000 bolts. | 2,650 bolts. |
Agorian Roulette | Your competitors have challenged you to a game of Agorian Roulette! During the battle, a moderator from the Agorian Council for Equal-Opportunity Dismemberment will teleport a random weapon into your hands every 20 seconds! | Constructo Shotgun Galvanic Upgrade mod and 8,500 bolts. | 2,800 bolts. |
Double Jeopardy | What happens when you pair a bloodthirsty war grok with an elite hydra tank? Either the deadliest tag-team in the known universe, or the most awkward blind date on record. Or both.
We're betting both. |
Constructo Shotgun and 9,000 bolts. | 2,950 bolts. |
Untouchable[]
This is a five-wave challenge against all types of enemies where Ratchet cannot take any damage. The Groovitron Glove and the CryoMine Glove (acquired on Zanifar) can make the challenge significantly easier, due to their crowd control abilities. Simultaneously the Tesla Spikes and Mr. Zurkon are useful as passive defense.
It is advisable to rely on using a Groovitron, staying within its radius along with strong area-of-effect weapons such as the Negotiator, Sonic Eruptor, or Dynamo of Doom, to clear enemy clusters out before the Groovitron ends. Using the hoverboots to gain distance can also prove useful when overwhelmed.
Endangered Species[]
This is a three-minute challenge where the only objective is to survive against agorian hunters, some of which spawn on elevated platforms and some on Ratchet's arena.
It is not essential to kill all enemies, only to avoid their attacks. Therefore, it may be best to simply kill the agorians that appear on Ratchet's arena (with strong weapons such as the Negotiator or Spiral of Death), use the Groovitron and CryoMine Gloves to disable enemies, and otherwise avoid attacks using the hoverboots. Surviving for three minutes will complete the challenge.
The Quick and the Dead[]
This challenge requires the player to kill 100 enemies in two minutes (120 seconds). The enemies in question are primarily thrashers and pyrospinners, with some agorian warriors and hunters appearing later. Using area-of-effect weapons and Mr. Zurkon coupled with Tesla Spikes to kill enemies while they are clustered together is the optimal strategy.
Agorian Roulette[]
This is a five-wave challenge where the player will automatically switch weapons as the challenge goes on. All types of enemies are fought. Weapons will switch randomly, and refill their ammo when Ratchet switches to them; as such, if the current weapon is proving ineffective against the enemies, simply avoiding enemy attacks (or using the wrench) until the switch happens is ideal.
Double Jeopardy[]
This is a tag-team boss battle against the war grok and the elite hydra tank. After losing a third of their health (and in the Hydra Tank's case, losing a third of its health and then losing a head), the bosses will switch out. They otherwise have the same attacks as before (though the war grok no longer deploys swarmers), and so the same tactics apply.
Championship II[]
Raritanium Cup[]
Challenge | Description | Prizes per completion | |
---|---|---|---|
First | Second | ||
Fire Proof | The pyrospinners have been reprogrammed to spend the next two minutes breaching the Battleplex energy barrier. Prevent 5 of them from succeeding using only your Constructo Shotgun! | Zoni and 5,000 bolts. | 1,650 bolts. |
Toxic Engagement | Despite warnings by the agorian Public Health and Water Slide Department, officials have sanctioned the use of lethal gas during their tournaments. For this challenge, a deadly toxin will be released while you battle a war grok using nothing but your Omniwrench! | RYNO V Holo-plan and 10,000 bolts. | 3,300 bolts. |
The Exterminator | "Death by Tetramite" is the noblest death an agorian warrior can suffer. Luckily for them, you've been handed an OmniSoaker full of nectar and a live tetramite burrow. Send your opponents to their doom without becoming insect food yourself! | Constructo Shotgun Detonator Upgrade mod and 15,000 bolts. | 4,950 bolts. |
Battery Bots on the Battlefield | The battery bots controlling the agorian teleporters have revolted, resulting in an uncontrollable flow of bloodthirsty gladiators. To activate the emergency cutoff switch, you'll have to return the bots to their sockets before time runs out! | Treasure Mapper and 20,000 bolts. | 6,600 bolts. |
Overkill | The agorians created a challenge so deadly it was officially declared "impossible" by the Terachnoid Consortium of Statisticians. To win, you'll have to survive 20 rounds of combat, a hungry war grok, and the meanest Hydra Tank this side of the Vartan Nebula. | Chimp-o-Matic and 25,000 bolts. | 8,250 bolts. |
Fire Proof[]
This is a two-minute timed challenge in which the player, using only the Constructo Shotgun, must prevent five pyrospinners from reaching the energy barrier at the end of the arena platform.
It should be possible to destroy most pyrospinners as they spawn. A number of ammo crates spawn enough that ammo for the Constructo Shotgun should not present an issue. It is still ideal to catch as many pyrospinners in a blast radius as possible for time efficiency, hence the recommended mods are the Double Barrel and the Perforator Upgrade for both spread and piercing.
Toxic Engagement[]
This challenge involves a boss battle against the war grok, but with only the wrench, and with lethal gas draining Ratchet's nanotech over time. Using comet-strikes and otherwise keeping a good distance from the war grok's attacks is the best strategy, as nanotech crates appear periodically throughout battle to help.
The Exterminator[]
This is a three-wave challenge against various agorian types and pyrospinners, where Ratchet can only use the OmniSoaker and the wrench. A tetramite nest is located in the middle of the arena. The OmniSoaker can be used to apply Breegus nectar on the enemies so that the tetramites aim for them; they will always prioritize enemies over bits of nectar dropped on the floor.
The challenge is more about dodging enemy attacks and keeping a distance from them and the tetramites. Smaller pyrospinners can simply be defeated with the wrench, while nectar and OmniSoaker should be used on the agorians. It is also possible to throw a grenadier's bomb back at them with the wrench at times throughout battle, which can be helpful when overwhelmed. When agorian phalanxes are deployed, prioritize removing their exoshields before applying the nectar.
Battery Bots on the Battlefield[]
This is a timed challenge in which the player must throw all battery bots into ports before proceeding. Each battery bot thrown into a port adds to the timer. It does not matter how many enemies are killed, as long as all battery bots are placed.
Because all enemies spawn in the middle of the arena, Tesla Spikes and the Rift Inducer 5000 can be placed to damage them while prioritizing the battery bots. Additionally, the Groovitron Glove can distract enemies while applying battery bots if needed.
Overkill[]
This is a 20-wave challenge against each type of enemy in a normal arena, where the final two waves are against the war grok and the elite hydra tank, respectively. It is an endurance challenge in which all types of weapons should be used, and though ammo crates appear often, conserving ammo may be needed.
The biggest danger (especially on harder difficulties) will be when overwhelmed by more durable enemies, giving Ratchet little space to move. It is ideal therefore to conserve Groovitrons, the Rift Inducer 5000, and the Mag-Net Launcher for the later waves. The wrench can be used against smaller pyrospinners to save ammo. It is likely that all weapons will be used at least once during the battle given the number of enemies and waves faced.
If a player is having difficulty with the challenge when first unlocked, waiting either for the RYNO V, higher weapon levels, or greater armor will allow it to be completed more easily.
Behind the scenes[]
There were plans to include racetracks for hoverboots in the Agorian Battleplex, as Insomniac Games had not included race tracks in the Ratchet & Clank series for some time and wished to attempt them again. Because it became clear the races would be too resource-intensive to develop, they were removed and unfinished tracks were added to the Insomniac Museum.[24] Hoverboot courses would later be added to the arena at Zurkie's for Rift Apart.
The battleplex lobby would also have included a procedurally generated arena amongst its games. This would procedurally generate a timed platforming challenge with a series of platforms and hazards. A number would have been generated for that challenge and, if players liked it, they could retry it, or give to a friend to complete. It was cut for being too resource-intensive, and also included in the museum.[25]
Notes[]
Annotations[]
- ↑ The Agorian Council for Equal-Opportunity Dismemberment organizes and moderates battles in the battleplex,[3] and is agorian-run to the point of following agorian honor code.[4] However, as Mac Mackeroy states that the battleplex hires terachnoids to do the thinking for them,[5] and the Terachnoid Consortium of Statisticians was involved in determining if a battle was feasible,[6] it is likely the terachnoids played a significant role in the running of the battleplex.
- ↑ Though Ratchet was declared the first non-agorian to have won a Battleplex tournament after he won the Bronze Tournament,[19] according to Azimuth, Kaden had won one years prior. Azimuth did also say that the agorians never admitted that a lombax won their tournament,[8] and rumors that a lombax had previously won it persisted.[4] As such, it is impossible to know if Ratchet and Kaden were the only winners at the Battleplex, or if more aliens of other species had won them.
