Abercrombie Fizzwidget is a support character in Going Commando. He is the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Megacorp, a massive corporation that dominates most of the Bogon Galaxy and markets within it. While he was assumed to have been responsible for the Protopet menace, it was revealed that Captain Qwark had been impersonating him and that he had been locked in a supply closet the entire time.[1]

History

Prior to Going Commando

Abercrombie Fizzwidget founded the Megacorp corporation in the Bogon Galaxy. The company would later dominate competition, such as Gadgetron, in most markets, in large part because of the success of the Triple-B (or the Big Badass Bomb) ballistic missile.[2] With no real competitors, Megacorp became the Bogon Galaxy's one and only choice for consumer products. Fizzwidget became friends with Angela Cross, a lombax scientist that worked in the genetics division of Megacorp.

Later, Qwark, recently disgraced in the Solana Galaxy for working with Chairman Drek, kidnapped Fizzwidget, having successfully earned enough bolts through selling Personal Hygenators to fund his comeback as a superhero in another galaxy with a new fanbase not yet soured on him. Qwark then tied Fizzwidget up in a supply closet at the Megacorp Headquarters on Yeedil[1] and set in motion a biological disaster in the form of the Protopet, a seemingly docile creature that would be mass-marketed as a pet. Staff recommended that the Protopet be immediately destroyed due to its incurable violent nature,[3] but Qwark ignored these warnings.

Angela Cross became suspicious of Fizzwidget after he pushed up the release date for the Protopet before she could fix its biological flaws and tame it. As a result, she left Megacorp and stole the Protopet.[4]

During the course of the game, many more of Megacorp's staff grew suspicious of Qwark, disguised as Fizzwidget. This led Megacorp to hire the Thugs-4-Less to protect him and eliminate Ratchet and Clank once they had become a threat, as they feared for Fizzwidget's health in his old age.[5]

An Abercrombie Fizzwidget robot gave tours around the Megacorp Armory on Todano and also appeared on planet Boldan in Silver City, offering Protopet samples. The Thug Leader used the bot to capture Ratchet and Clank and sent them to the Thugs-4-Less Prison after falsely accusing them of trying to kill Fizzwidget.

When Ratchet, Clank, and Angela reached the Protopet inside Megacorp Headquarters, Qwark attempted to frame the three for the Protopet menace across the galaxy and take credit for defeating it. His plan failed, as he used the helix-o-morph incorrectly and accidentally amplified it to a Mutant Protopet. While Ratchet and Clank defeated the Mutant Protopet, Angela discovered the real Fizzwidget in the supply closet and freed him. Fizzwidget thanked Ratchet and Clank and took care of the tamed Protopet after the helix-o-morph had been used to fix it.

Up Your Arsenal

Later, Ratchet and Clank met with the black market dealer Slim Cognito on Aquatos, who had fled the Bogon Galaxy after being incriminated for selling a Suck Cannon upgrade to a minor, selling Megacorp weapons. As Ratchet and Clank had helped Fizzwidget in the past, he ensured that Slim gave them a discount on the Megacorp weapons sold, allowing them to purchase the weapons for free (providing the player has a save file of Going Commando).[6]

Fizzwidget later attended the movie premiere of the Secret Agent Clank film.

Characteristics

Fizzwidget is a humanoid alien with three fingers and two antennas on his head. He wears glasses, a suit and bow tie, along with a Megacorp badge. He has white hair and a plump body with short legs.

Qwark, when posing as Fizzwidget, appeared aloof, and at times, inattentive when listening to warnings. However, most people mistook this change in behavior as him turning senile in his old age.[5][4]

Fizzwidget often used longer words when talking. Captain Qwark, when posing as him, tried to emulate this trait but would frequently get his vocabulary incorrect or make up words. Fizzwidget has a secretary, Miss Noodlebottom, and is known to have been friends with Angela Cross. No other Megacorp employees are named.

Behind the scenes

Abercrombie Fizzwidget was voiced by Jim Ward, who also voices Captain Qwark among other characters in the series. This allows Fizzwidget and Qwark to sound similar. Fizzwidget's name is a parody of Abercrombie and Fitch, a popular clothing line which has been ridden with corporate scandals.[7]

Captain Qwark was a late addition to the story, as the team missed Qwark's humor. He was introduced in the form of Behind the Hero segments at first, before he was made the main villain later on, with the plot twist in which he impersonates Fizzwidget revealed.[8]

He also made an appearance in the non-canon Ratchet & Clank: Bang Bang Bang! Critical Danger of the Galaxy Legend manga.
